Parking Options outside of Lauterbrunnen

Arriving this year for our annual stay we passed, while riding the train (Berner Oberland Bahn), a new parking area at Matten bei Interlaken. For CHF 5.00 per day you can park all day, 5:00-23:00 https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/arrival-at-station-car-parks/parking/park-ride-matten-bei-interlaken/. There are charging stations for EVs.

By contrast, the big garage at Lauterbrunnen is CHF 18.00 for the first day, although that is 24 hours. Also, at Wilderswil there is 24 hour parking for CHF 5.00 per day for unlimited days https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/arrival-at-station-car-parks/parking/park-ride-wilderswil/.

While you still have to buy a train ticket, which is CHF 7.20 without a half fare card and CHF 3.60 with the HFC. If one has a Berner Oberland Regional Pass or Jungfrau Pass, that train ride is included.

No one has been using the Matten b.I. Park-and-ride in the number of times we’ve passed. Perhaps WengeK or Wanderweg could weigh in and tell us if it is relieving congestion in Lauterbrunnen.

The Matten car park saw a lot of use last winter. In Winter they run extra trains for the skiers even. I indeed do not see it used a lot in summer. The plan is to also develop the area around the new station as a business park, and the people who are going to work there need public transport too. In Switzerland they are smart enough to make sure that this is already in place before the development starts.

Personally I would completely ban non local cars from the valley and even increase the prices for the car park. But that is just me...

Thanks, WengenK. Good to have the insider’s view. I agree: banning non-local’s cars would be brilliant!

Yes, unfortunately it’s made no effect on Lauterbrunnen so far. It’s so extremely frustrating to see so many cars with people driving down the main road with phones hanging out their window filming everything. People like that who are just driving through for an Instagram video should be required to take the bus or walk. It 100% should be a locals only car situation, but unfortunately the Schilthornbahn has a big incentive to not restrict car usage because they want as many people as possible going back to Stechelberg to ride their cable cars. With all the money they’ve put into their new funifors opening over the next 6 months, I see a big uphill battle to do anything about the traffic in Lauterbrunnen. The only thing that can be done is doing our own part to not use cars in the BO and encourage everyone we talk to to do the same. And in the meantime I spend as little time in Lauterbrunnen as physically possible.
