We will be staying in Murren for 3 nights in Mid May. Where do you suggest we park our car?
I suggest you not have a car at all, but if you’re going to - options are Stechelberg, Lauterbrunnen or Matten b.Interlaken — cheapest will be Matten and the train goes right there into Lauterbrunnen to then catch cable car to Grutschalp and train to Mürren. Most convenient is Stechelberg. You will have to pay for your luggage if you ride that way.
Would you mind giving us your entire itinerary? So far, you have posted being in the Cinque Terre, then wanting to go to Geneva, then from Geneva to Interlaken and back. Why will you need a car?
My husband and I are visiting friends who are currently living in Geneva. That is our home base, although not where we are ending up spending much time.
There was a request for our itinerary:
5/7 arrive in Geneva 11am, afternoon and evening exploring Geneva
5/8 - 5/13 We plan to spend 3 nights in Cinque Terre with our Geneva friends. Still hammering out plans for the other two nights. Original thought was to stay in Milan for a night on the way down and possibly Turin for a night on the way back. But that's not set in stone yet.
5/14--5/17 My husband and I plan to spend 3 nights in Murren; possible side trips on the way over and/or back
5/18 Explore Geneva or surrounding area
5/19 Fly home to Seattle
As for why we need a car. Our friends said they would prefer a car for the trip to Cinque Terre so that we have more flexibility for exploring on the way down and back. I had been planning to take the train to the Berner Oberland area, but my friend suggested again that a car may give us more flexibility. It also might be cheaper. I'm just collecting information to determine which way to go. Train or car.
I am fully aware of the fact that both trips involve visiting no car areas and our car will just be parked for several days.
Cinque terre is another area where a car is a handicap rather than a asset. You will there have to park your car outside of the towns and take a shuttle in. Using the trains there is far easier.
Note that Matten is not an option here, as you are not allowed to park overnight there. It will be Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. If you come during high season better reserve a spot in advance.
Best place to park is at the bottom of the Schilthornbahn in Stechelberg. Lots of parking. Easy. Right at the cable car up to Murren.
