Parking at Stechelberg

Do I need to reserve a parking space in Stechelberg where we take the gondola to Murren so as to be sure we have a spot?

I don't see any contact info at the website. It would looks to be totally unmanned, so there is nobody there to hold your spot. You get a ticket when you enter the gate, like any other parking lot, but like most European parking lots and garages, when leaving you pay at an automat at the cable car base with cash or credit card, and the machine spits out a magstrip card you use to open the gate when you leave. It has a limited amount of time it will open the gate, so don't dawdle.

Nope, what Sam said.

I think that in winter peak season it is possible to reserve a space at the multi storey car park in Lauterbrunnen, but I've never seen Stechelberg anywhere near full.

Beware risk of landing paragliders and hang gliders.

I've seen the Stechelberg lot at full (or near) capacity, but that was during the Christmas holiday, which is the peak time of the year. On my two visits during the hiking season, it was not even close to being filled.

This past June we had a friend drive to meet us for a few days and he parked at Stechelberg. He didn't reserve parking and actually he wasn't charged ANYTHING to park there. It was free. It's a much smaller parking garage than the multistory in Lauterbrunnen.

When we visited in 2014 there were two parking 'areas' at Stechelberg - first there were several large open areas for 'day-trippers' these were unattended / no-charge, and second there were several rows of rented covered parking spots that I assume were for the folks who live in Muerren and Gimmelwald, etc.

In late-May the various open area lots were mostly empty. Unless things get five or six times busier when you visit I don't think there will be any problems getting a spot.

Have fun!
