paragliding and via ferrata

I'm thinking about going paragliding (never been paragliding before) and wondering which location is "best"? I'll be in Luzern, Interlaken, Murren, and Grindelwald for three nights each.

I also want to try via ferrata, but will need a guide, as I'm traveling by myself and don't want to risk it alone. I've watched a video of Murren via ferrata, and I think it's a bit too intense for me, mostly the cable/tightrope crossings. I'm ok with suspended bridges and zip lines, and I think I'll do ok on the metal rungs and ladders. Are there other via ferrata routes that don't have a tightrope crossing? If not, I'll just do zip lines and the easy cliff walks. For reference, I'm 65, female, in pretty good physical condition, but I have no rock climbing experience.

Check with your travel insurance, if it's considered under extreme sports, to determine you're covered. I was all ready to paraglide in Murren, and accidentally saw the section of my policy , which did not cover accidents relayed to such. Granted it's a very safe experience, per the data, but a consideration.
Good luck!

Go for it!
My stomach churns just looking at the videos and descriptions of Murren's Via Ferrata. https://www.earthtrekkers.com/murren-via-ferrata-guide/
We are a group of 10 65+s and at a pre-planning meeting last month for our time in Wengen, one couple was out of town. I emailed them a clip of the Via Ferrata and told them that we all decided this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we'd booked for all of us, including them. They freaked out and replied that we should go ahead but they'd find a bierstube while we risked our lives. (Of course, we had no intention of actually doing the Via Ferrata). I do want to try this: https://fullsuitcase.com/first-cliff-walk-grindelwald/
Good Luck!

Thanks, you're right! I forgot to mention that I bought travel insurance that includes "adventure sports" such as paragliding and via ferrata.

It's definitely not for the faint of heart! And I'm trying to be realistic about my abilities, so as not to get into a situation I regret. My biggest fear is the cable/tightrope, because if I fall off it, I don't think I have the upper body and arm strength to get myself back up on it.

I am planning to do First Cliff Walk, Titlis Cliff Walk, and Birg Thrill Walk, as well as other viewing platforms. Are there other cliff walks besides these that I don't know about?

HI! We are booked for Murren Via Ferrata for June 8th! I'll report back and let you know how it went! we did pay extra to get a private tour guide. They are currently not offering the ziplining part of the course.

I took a tandem paragliding flight while in Murren. Beautiful views and a fun flight.

Thank you all for your replies! Much appreciated!

Grace, I'll be in Murren 6/12-15, so I'll look for your report. Thanks for the tip about the zip line.

Rocket and kristyn, thanks for your comments about paragliding in Murren! I'll look into it a bit more. So far, I've only checked out the one in Interlaken.

There is no paragliding at Interlaken—-no cliffs there! The paragliding companies are based in Interlaken, but they go to Mürren or elsewhere with a peak or cliffs for the actual jump.

My husband did the Mürren via Ferrata in 2018, at age 74. He went with the guided group, booked through the Intersport shop. He said the suspension bridge was actually the harder part, as it wobbles. He did not mention the tightrope sections as being difficult at all.

According to this blog with photos, if you go with a guide you do the Tyrolian traverse (aka zip line) instead of the first (linger) tightrope/cable. And the way you are attached, with a high cable on either side you can hole for balance (in addition to being clipped in with your carabiner and harness), it doesn’t look like one could easily “fall off” the cable.

@Lola this isn't true. In Interlaken they take you up to Beatenberg and you jump from there. You can watch them land in the big field in the middle of Interlaken.

My mistake. Last time my kids looked into paragliding, the two companies offering it were based in Interlaken and the paragliding was from near Mürren.

Lola, thanks for your input re the suspension bridge. It does look a bit wobbly!

myswisslife: yes, I think the paragliding in Interlaken is the video I saw. But it sounds like there are other places too. I need to look into it more. Thanks for your comment.

There are several companies in Interlaken that offer paragliding and depending on what you they will take you to Beatenberg, or Murren or Grindelwald, or some other place. Beatenberg is popular as you get a very nice view of the lakes that way. Murren gives you the experience of the sheer clifs.

Thanks, WengenK! If I decide to do the via ferrata in Murren, perhaps I'll do paragliding at Beatenberg, for a different view.

Would you mind sharing which travel insurance company you decided to use that included "adventure sports"? Our family is also planning to do the via ferrata in Murren and probably paragliding. Thank you!

I use World Nomads for travel insurance. They have two categories, and the more expensive policy covers adventure sports such as paragliding and via ferrata. My policy for one person for two weeks cost $166.

Thank you for responding to the travel insurance question. World Nomads was one of 2 companies I narrowed it down to considering that offer that adventure sports coverage. Thank you.
