Looking at train from Vienna to Zurich and saw overnight train. Is it a good trip? Am I missing too many good view? Is a double cabin worth it? Thinking of travelling with wife on a Sunday night. I see I can get cheap trip on a Monday but need to be in Switzerland by Monday as I only 5 days and fly out of Zurich Friday afternoon.
I've never been on it as I prefer the day trains because of the views. In your case it saves a valuable day so probably makes sense.
The train leaves Vienna Hbf at 21:25 arriving Zurich HB at 08:20, presumably you will be catching a connecting train to your final destination in Switzerland. Sunday night is more popular as it will be full of returning weekend visitors.
This page on the incomparable "Man in Seat 61" website has a lot of info about the train, plus photos and a video: https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/nightjet.htm
We did it as a family and liked it!
However, bear in mind we are life-long campers and used to sleeping in small quarters.
If you are a relatively good sleeper and like something adventurous, go for it! I'd do it again.
The worth it question is better for you to decide, depending on privacy, budget, etc. We had one stranger in our cabin, but hardly noticed since we slept thru it! (Put my wallet under my pillow, so no worries.)
It is 30 EUR more (total for 2) for a 2 person compartment vs the 3 person compartment. Looking 3 months out, it was 208 EUR total for 2 from Vienna to Zurich in a 2 person compartment.
This train route does have nice mountain views by day, if you have 8 hours to spend that way. For the night train, see also www.nightjet.com.
