Overnight in Zurich or go straight to Lucerne?

Hi Travelers - Need your expert advice, we are traveling from Seattle to Zurich in September arriving at 8pm. We'll obviously be a bit tired from the flight. For those who have done this trip, should we just go all the way to Lucerne that night, or spend the evening in Zurich, get a good nights sleep and then make our way to Lucerne? Our plan is to be in Lucerne for 2 nights and then off to Murren. If your advice is to stay the night in Zurich, please suggest a hotel in the proximity of the train station.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Zurich airport has its own train station, and there are trains that could get you to Luzern in a tad over an hour. So you could conceivably be there before midnight. Or you could just stay at an airport hotel and catch an early morning train.

We had a similar situation a few years ago, and went straight to Lucerne. The train is easy to use, even when jet lagged, and the ride goes by quickly. Then you will wake up to the beauty of Lucerne! Safe travels!

Knowing how easy the journey is, I’d press on. It might depend on your appetites and how you’ll deal with dinner, etc.
If you are not going to drop once you check in, waking Lucerne at night is really lovely and I would not be able to resist getting some fresh air and stretching my legs by walking over the old bridges before turning in.

I would also suggest taking the train right way to Lucerne. There is a Coop grocery store at the airport that is open until 10:30pm. So, you could grab a snack or sandwich there before boarding the train.

If you’re not familiar with Swiss train tickets, just buy your ticket when you land. They are not time or train specific so you can take any train you like. Either buy from the SBB app (my preference) or at one of the ticket machines. Unless of course you’ll have the Swiss Travel Pass in which no ticket will be needed.
