Hi! We have three full days that we will be staying at the base of Mt. Rigi in an Airbnb at Vitznau. We are three adults and three boys (ages 2-6 with lots of energy) Is it overkill to do all three mountains (this is our only time in the Alps at all b/c the next morning onto Venice) or is each one unique enough to make it worthwhile?
Thank you so much for your input!
Choose one only, whichever is
Closer to your base. I have enjoyed all, yes they are diff but not enuf to visit all.
Thanks! Well, we are based at Mt Rigi so that would be the closest... any other ideas for the other two days to get amazing Alps views while we are based in Vitznau?
If you have plans to do some hiking, I could see how you might want to choose two of them. You could get some information on various hiking options. I see that your kids are young, but I would think there are some shorter hikes that would be appropriate and scenic. But you may want to save time to explore Luzern. It is quite a charming city.
Thanks! We are visiting friends in Luzern over the weekend and will be touring the city itself on Thursday afternoon / Friday. Saturday will be a break day to give the kids a rest, then leaving early Sunday morning for our new base at Vitznau. They all looked great so can easily choose two. (Rigi on Sunday plus one of the other ones on either Monday or Tuesday) Any other recommendations for a third day trip? (Then we are leaving to Venice on Wednesday morning) thanks!
Well, for us, part of the fun of Rigi was the boat ride. You will already be at Vitznau and I would guess you would have already done several boat rides. I didn't do Pilatus, but I believe there were many activities and view points. The website has very stunning photos. Since you are already at Vitznau, a trip up Rigi would be fairly short leaving you time for other activities. If you have Swiss passes, Rigi would be free and I think Pilatus might be discounted.
We stayed at the Rigi Hotel and truely enjoyed their casual spa. Reasonable, fun and relaxing perhaps it may interest u. We had a nice dinner at the hotels dinner house also.
I don’t know what time of year you are going but the local mountain s may be relatively snow free during the summer.
Mt. TItlis is 10,000 feet and supposedly has snow all year. It’s about 2 hours by train from Vitznau to Engelberg but it will entail one or two train changes. Crowds build later in the day so go early. Also do consider if the altitude will negatively impact any in your group.
Thanks for the tip! Didn't think about that. We will take it slow. & we are going in a couple weeks. From all the responses, I haven't heard anything better to do in the area that would be better than doing another alps day? Thanks!
I did Rigi and Pilatus last year. I found them sufficiently different to enjoy both immensely.
I also went to Titlis a couple of days later. Clouds and rain the whole way, so hard to evaluate.
That's super helpful, thanks! We can only pray for good weather. Accuweather is currently predicting all partially sunny/ partly cloudy days for the three days in the alps
