One week itinerary in October with 6 month old. Please help!!

Hello,

My wife and I, and our 6 month old, are traveling to Switzerland in early october. Can you all please offer recommendations for how to schedule our 7 nights there? We are currently flying into and out of Zurich, but we could change to leave out of Geneva or vice-versa.

Some areas that we are wanting to stay include Murren or Wengen for a few nights. Otherwise, we are flexible and open to suggestions. I see Lucerne recommended a lot and am not sure if that is worth a few days. Otherwise, would people recommend going to Zermatt or Lake Geneva?

We both likke being outdoors a lot. With an infant, we'll try to do day outings but nothing too wild. We just want to get outdoors and see very pretty sights and stay in nice places where we can enjoy ourselves and the views while the baby naps.

We'd really appreciate all recommendations and help!

Thanks

There was a post/discussion about Switzerland and bringing an infant. It was within the last year, I think. It was about potential altitude issues. Lola was one of the persons giving input.

I'd fly in and out of Zurich unless there is something in Geneva of interest. Personally, there are many, many lovely places in Switzerland, Geneva would be low on the list, unless you want to do a visit of CERN (which was wonderful if you like science)

Off the top of my head. I'd arrive Zurich and immediately train to Luzern (one of my favorite cities in Europe) for 2-3 nights. Then 3-4 nights in Berner Oberland.

Maybe the above Search will help. I also remember the great post jukes refers to, altho your baby is too young for playgrounds. Are you using a child backpack carrier and accessing the wonderful Swiss rail system?

I'd suggest Lucerne (3-nights) and the Berner Oberland for the bulk of the trip. No one is ever ready to leave the BO. Again, check if the 6000 ft altitude is ok for the baby.

Have a great, but different, trip with your child. Safe travels!

Will your baby be 6 months old during the trip or is your baby 6 months now?
Probably easiest is to just stay 5 nights in Berner Oberland (like Wengen or Murren) and 2 nights in Lucerne, especially if you like being outdoors. If your flight is after 11 am, you should just stay in Lucerne the night before your flight as its only an hour from the airport by train. With a kid, I would minimize the number of travel days and also bring along the minimum of gear as carrying all the things plus baby around the country on the trains can get tiring. Definitely recommend taking the trains vs driving, though! No need to worry about a carseat, parking, etc.
For babygear, bring along a supportive baby carrier (Ergo 360 works great) for carrying your baby while you hike. Probably a fancy hiking baby carrying backpack is not worth it for this trip. Your baby will likely sleep/nap while you hike so its perfect! Also, consider getting some good baby-carrying jackets - Mamalila is a great brand! - as it can be cool and rainy in September.

I wanted to thank you all for the advice! Our baby will actually be 7 months. I did some searching, and I think he should be okay to be at that altitude at that age. I appreciate you all prompting me to look into it though.

Based on everyones suggestion, Lucerne for a couple days and then the Berner Oberland for the rest will likely be what we do. Do you think its wise to stay put in one city in the BO for the 5 days and take day trips from there, or would you recommend going to different places for a few nights?

Also, if staying in one place in the BO, along with Lucerne, would you add any other overnight stops during your trip?

thanks much!

My recommendation would be to stay in Wengen for your 5 days in the BO, rather than switching locations. We found it a great base, and it was easy to travel to the other areas. Enjoy your trip!

Yes just stay in one city in the BO. They are so close to each other that its very annoying to have to deal with changing in the middle (packing up your stuff, figuring out where to store it between check out and check in, unpacking) that you end up pretty much wasting a day anyway.
Good luck and remember that with kids, anything can happen, so just make space for relaxing and enjoying being together as a little family!
