One Night Stay in Switzerland from Varenna to Paris

We will be travelling from Varenna to Paris and have a day to spare in Switzerland.

Should we include the Bernina Express route from Varenna to Lucerne or should we go the Monza>Chiasso>Lugano route?
We are planning to stay a night in Lucerne and then head to Paris the next afternoon. We want to see the Alps and the scenic beauty, So do you suggest we spend the night and a half day in Lucerne or any other town which might we more convenient on the Bernina Express route?

Thanks Sasha. Would it still make sense to go to Lucerne and stay the night there enroute Paris?

I'd say yes. It is about 4 1/2 hours from Luzern to Paris via Basel. Varenna to Luzern via Tirano and Chur will take the better part of a day. Nice scenery and impressive railway engineering.
