one night in Lausanne or Montreux -- can you recommend a hotel?

We are traveling from Paris, staying in either Lausanne or Montreux for one night, and then continuing to the Oberland area via Golden Pass. We need a comfortable, quiet place to stay -- ideally but not necessarily with breakfast. Walking distance to the train station, and somewhere in the $200 range. What do you suggest?

I have stayed at the grand hotel swiss in montruex and will be staying there again next year.

It is right across the street from the train station. And just down some stairs is the lakefront.

When’s your trip? If you’re able to book early enough, you’ll be able to get a good price. If you are looking at this summer though, the rate might be too high for you.

thank you! it looks like all the options are non-refundable prepay... not super comfortable with that, as I keep having to make tweaks lol! But it also looks like a great location.

lisa,

I stayed at the Hotel Elite in Lausanne and would certainly recommend it - https://www.elite-lausanne.ch/charming-hotel-in-the-centre-of-lausanne-en3.html . It's very close to the rail station and funicular station, and there are some nice restaurants in the area. As I recall there's a stairway a short walk from the hotel, and the rail station is at the bottom. The boat docks are easy to access also. I also vaguely recall that the hotel provided a pass for the funicular.

We love the Grand Hotel Swiss Majestic as Carrie has mentioned. It’s literally across the street from the train station and has lake views. We stay there because we’re Marriott members and it’s part of Marriott so we can use points to bring down the cost. It’s the location that can’t be beat. If you’re not a Marriott member sign up as they often have specials or discounts for members even if you aren’t using points.

If you stay in Lausanne try to get a hotel in the Port D'Ouchy area which is right on Lake Geneva and by a lovely promenade. We stayed at the Beau Rivage Palace which was nice but expensive. Chateau D'Ouchy would be a good possibility and there are others by the lake that are less expensive as well.

I am a big Marriott fan, but the rate for just a one night stay is rather high and seems like a waste of resources. I guess it depends what time you arrive in Montreaux from Paris. If it is late in the day and only one night, I would suggest staying in Vevey and just catch a train in the morning to Montreaux for your Golden Pass train. Vevey is nice and it is only a 5-10 minute train ride back to Montreaux with many trains running in the morning. The hotels are more in your budget range in Vevey.

At a glance it seems like Vevey is at least as p ricey as montreux or lausanne -- at least if you want to near the train station... is there a particular hotel you recommend?

I guess there are numerous factors. How close do you need to be to the train station? There is a public bus that runs to the station. I just happen to notice that overall average pricing in Vevey was less than Montreux. I have not stayed in Vevey personally, but it seemed like a less expensive alternative. Are you looking on Booking.com for hotels? The website is very good for seeing many hotels on a map and their prices for the date you enter. Pricing also is very dependent of your dates. I just picked a random date in July and there were several hotels in your price range within a mile radius of the city center.

Good luck.
