We are spending one night in Basel after a Rhine River cruise. have not booked hotel and transportation with Viking. any ideas on hotel which is easy to get to after cruise and then easy to get to airport the next day. Also, suggestions of fun things to do to maximize our one day in Basel. Thank you!
There are dozens of hotels in Basel, and as I live here I have never stayed in any of them!
I suggest you start with the official city tourist site: https://www.basel.com/en
The hotel-finder is here: https://www.basel.com/en/Hotel-Bed-and-Breakfast
Any hotel in the city limits will be good, depends on your budget. Most are in our near the centre. All hotels in the city give you a free transport card when you book in, which allows you unlimited travel on the trams and buses, so you can get anywhere in the city or suburbs in a few minutes.
There are three possible places the river boats dock. One (St Johann) is nearest the centre and 100 metres from a tram stop, The other two are more of a walk. Depending on luggage or budget, you could either get a tram to your hotel (CHF 3.80 per person) or a taxi (~CHF 20-30). The taxi drivers know when a boat is due in and are waiting.
Getting to the airport is easy. Tram to the station (Bahnhof SBB), then shuttle bus to the airport (every 5-7 minutes). The transport card you get from your hotel covers you, so zero cost. If you get a taxi that would be ~CHF 40.
Things to do: Basel is a city for wondering around and looking at the cityscape, and the river. I love the Münsterplatz (Cathedral square, click for photo) and the narrow alleys in the old town (click for photo, note the date above the door on the left), because you can do a complete 360° turn and say to yourself "WTF century am I in?"
Basel is also good for museums. Kunstmuseum (fine arts) Fondation Beyeler (20th century art), plus many more.
Thanks so much!!!
