One Day in Bern

We like to walk from the HBF, through the old town, to the Alte Tram Depot restaurant, have a nice beer and a nice meal, eating outside. It's just over the river, right past the old Bear Pit (hence the name, "Bern"). It's a pleasant walk, but there are also trams going both ways, if you prefer.

Don't miss the Zytglogge - the supersized cuckoo clock in the centre of the Old Town. Barengraben, the bear pit just across the river at the end of the Old Town peninsula is something you don't see every day (the new one is much more humane than the original). And we really enjoyed the National Museum across the river to the south of the Old Town. Just soak in the Old Town - one of Europe's best preserved old towns due to no fires or wars.

You can walk there from the bear pits (steep uphill climb on cobblestones) or take the bus.

On SBB look for Bern, Rosengarten for bus schedule. I usually go there from the main train station, but if you are at the bear pits just enter: Bern, Bärenplatz → Bern, Rosengraten.
