We plan to stay one day and night in Zurich and we are wondering where the best location would be. We would like to see the historical area, unique sites, interesting restaurants, etc. Any tips and recommendations are certainly appreciated. We will plan to catch an uber to the airport. So we are not worried about catching a train. Thank you!
I can't comment from experience, but we have 1.5 days in Zurich before a 7am flight home in May. We decided to stay at the Radisson Blu Airport for our two nights. We can walk to the terminal from the hotel. We decided it was easier to take the train back into Zurich rather than mess around with an early taxi or Uber.
If you stay in the Old Town, it's easy to use the train to the airport- about a 15 minute ride. The train goes directly into the airport.
Have a great trip!
Zurich isn’t that large and has an extensive public transport network, so location isn’t as critical as in some cities. Generally I’d recommend staying near the main train station or somewhere roughly between there, the old town Niederdorf area and the lakefront, especially for a one night stay. There are also a number of hotels near the Hardbrücke station, which is fine but more of an office/nightlife area that is not especially quaint or interesting for most tourists. The hotels close to the airport are often cheaper, so some people like to save money there and then just take the tram or train to and from the city (10 to 30 mins depending on exactly where you stay).
No need to use Uber unless you have a specific need to - public transport directly to the airport terminal runs early to late (10 min trip from the main train station, comparable or faster than car) and will be cheaper.
When I was in Zurich, a couple months back, I stayed at the Home Hotel which is a 5 minute train ride from the main Bahnhof and less than 20 minutes from the airport. I liked being a short walk from the lake, near a couple decent restaurants, and next to a shopping mall and library. It was easy to take the tram into the altstadt, easy to walk along the lakeside, and I'd stay there again. I highly recommend the Landesmuseum for it's historical displays.
