My husband and I are traveling to Switzerland for 9 nights in July. We fly into Geneva. We are then spending 2 days in Bern, 3 in Lauterbrunnen. We would like to go to Turin, Italy for 2 nights, then back to Geneva. Is this too ambitious? Should we stay in Switzerland for the entire time? If yes, where would we go after Lauterbrunnen? If Turin seems doable--any tips on that? Thanks!
Interlaken-Turin is about 5 to 6 hours by rail, so it's certain feasible to add it to the trip. Other Swiss spots worthy of consideration are Montreux, Luzern, Lugano, and the Engadine area (roughly around Scuol).
Personally, I would do 5 nights in the Lauterbrunnen area and visit Bern as a day-trip. It's only about 1.5 hours away by rail. It would save you a check-in/check-out process. So, maybe 5 nights in Lauterbrunnen, 2 in Turin, then 2 in Montreux. There are frequent trains from Montreux to the Geneva airport that take 70-90 minutes, so you don't necessarily have to finish the trip in Geneva unless your return flight is very early.
I like Fast Eddie's itinerary. Bern was OK for a day, but I am glad we did not spend the night.
We are going to Lauterbrunnen for the 5th time this fall our 3rd stay of a full week. If you love mountains, scenery, mountain lifts and trains, easy walking.light hiking, you cannot beat the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding area.
We also love Torino and even 3 nights there would be easy to fill. Fabulous food, greatest Egyptian Museum outside of Egypt, and the National Museum of the Automobile is excellent. Then there are the Savoy palaces. Such decadence!
If I would want to go from Switzerland to Italy it would not be industrial city of Turin. I would devote my 9 nights to Switzerland.
