One afternoon and evening - Zurich

On our way home from this summer's trip we will have an overnight layover in Zurich. We are staying at the Hilton at the airport (points being used, so that is not changeable). We should arrive in Zurich in mid-afternoon on a Sunday. Our flight for the States departs mid-morning on Monday.

This is not our first trip to Switzerland, but we have never spent time in Zurich. What would you do with just an evening? I like to hear other people's experiences and preferences as I try to narrow it down.

We like everything - art, museums, nature, walking, etc. There are food allergies (gluten), so food stops are generally not on the top of our list.

Thanks in advance.

Walking by the lake is always beautiful. Love walking by the Grossmunster Church and even inside - you can also ascend the towers.

Visit the Fraumünster Church and step inside to view the stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. Walking down Bahnhofstrasse and window shopping at all of the outrageously expensive shops can be fun as you imagine all of the gold buried in vaults under your feet. Too bad food is not an option we always enjoy the Zueghauskellar with it's lively atmosphere and very good food - as well as reasonably priced for super expensive Zurich.

Visiting Lucerne or Zurich on a Saturday morning is always great fun with the flea market up and running in the old town. You can find some great treasures to take back home with you.

Tim, Thank you for the recommendations. Based on my search of reviews looks like your restaurant recommendation may be able to handle a strictly gluten-free meal. I appreciate the info!

I'm a different Tim, and I'm NOT responding to the first church idea at all! But I was in Zurich a few years ago and greatly regret not knowing about Sigmar Polke's ABSTRACT windows in the Grossmünster church. That will be the first thing I go to see if I'm in Zurich again. I learned about them in the massive Polke retrospective at MoMA in NYC a few years ago. His fellow Kunstakademie Düsseldorf student Gerhard Richter designed some perhaps more famous abstract/minimalist windows for the Cologne Cathedral.

Tim #2 (by no means meant to imply that you are a second-rate Tim. . . ),

I appreciate the additional info. We love stained glass. I see the two churches mentioned by both of you are near each other, so seems like a great plan to visit both.
