Omio train tickets

We want to take a train from Zurich to Bregenz, Austria (to pick up an Austrian car) I noticed the the route is better on Omio. What is that and is it reliable?

Can we buy tickets once we arrive or do we need to pre-purchase?

I have an injury so the whole trip is not certain. I already purchased train tickets that we won't use and are non-refundable so I don't want to do that again, unless they are cheap.

I would not use Omio but it may work for you. Omio is a third party and is prone to be inaccurate.
SBB is the company the owns and is operating the train and that makes the schedule.

You should be able to get a direct EuroCity (it will say EC in the search results using the SBB site) train depending on what day or time.
You need to prepurchase direct EC trains only. But I think you can do it a few days before and there is no need for months in advance.

Thank you for that info.

Our goal is to pick up an Austrian car. It looked like coming from Zurich, Bregenz was a good location. Any other suggestions?

A third party reseller cannot have a "better route", as they do not operate any trains. They just sell tickets (with a commission added) for other operator's trains. Yes, you can buy tickets when you get to Switzerland.

Susan and Monty-- couple of comments:
* your the first response you got was from artificial intelligence and I don't know whether that's a name or AI
* I've been traveling East from London to Metz France and then south to Zurich and now have headed east and I'm in Salzburg. I say that because quite a few of my tickets have been with omio. Actually one of my connections took me to Bregenz and I have been traveling on obb for maybe the past 2 weeks after buying tickets online.

Yes we are replacing humans and Sam agrees to avoid Omio.

OMIO will not have better prices. Better look closer. OMIO just books the ticket on your behalf from the same booking system you use when you book directly with the railway.

But since this is an international route you can book this both with the Swiss and the Austrian railways, and it is indeed possible that eg. one or the other still has some discounted fares available that the other hasn't, so if getting the cheapest tickets is paramount check both.

Thank you for the help. I figured something was odd, so I’m glad I asked. It is weird that it showed a faster route with no transfers while the SBB did not. I’ll go back and search again. Cheapest isn’t a factor, just easiest is what I’m looking for.

Thanks again!

Yes, direct EC train every 2 hours at 33 past the odd hours (7:33, 9:33, etc).
