I am in the process of making driving routes for a holiday in Italy and Switzerland. I am considering the Nufenen Pass but I know very little about it. Is this pass a good alternative to get to Saas Fee from Milano?
Thank you
Bit of a long way around. The Simplon Pass is the logical route, but the Nufenen would work once it opens in the summer.
Most high Alpine passes in Switzerland are open from May to November. From November to May they are closed by snow. They can be very spectacular, but a hard drive. There are signs as you approach the pass to say if they are open or closed.
We drove it to Milan and on to Firenze many years ago. I still remember it. It was spectacular. Highly recommend it if you have the time. The views are amazing if the weather's good. There was snow at the top even though it was the height of Summer and very hot in the valleys. But do take your time. Start early in the day ... you don't want to do it at night!
