Hello,
I’m starting a river cruise from Basel in November. The Christmas markets won’t open till the 26th of November (2022), I believe.
Will miss that. Cruise starts the 22nd.
I’d love to know activities to do prior to the cruise in Basel.
Will be there 2 days prior to cruise starting.

How about day tripping to Lucerne and/ or Bern? Both are great cities to explore on their own, and maybe Bern's wonderful Xmas markets will be open. Lucerne's markets open later in Dec. if you have clear weather, in Lucerne, you can take a boat ride to the cogwheel train that ascends Mt Rigi, and frolic in the snow at the summit. (A great thrill if you're a Californian!)

Concur with the suggestion about a day trip to Lucerne. One of my favorite Swiss cities. Very easy to explore on foot and easy to arrive on the train.
You can also do a day trip to the Rhine Falls and Schaffhausen which has a nice cobbled stoned pedestrian center.
