Hi, we were in mid and southern Swtizerland two summers ago and absolutely loved every second. This summer we will be in Augsburg Germany for an event, but we are hoping to sneak over to Switzerland if possible for a day or maybe two. What we really love are the beautiful mountains, small quaint villages in the valley, rolling hills with cows, etc. (for a point of reference, Kandersteg was amazing and we would love a place like that). Our time is very limited, so we are looking for recommendations that might be in the northeast corner of Switzerland - a place we can take an early train to, spend the day, and train back. Any good ideas? Or do you think it is too far and we should stick closer to Augsburg for the day trips?
This is the area I'd really like to go to: appenzell area. Not sure if it meets your access criteria.
Thanks, stan! It looks quite nice there!
melanie,
I would also suggest having a look at Appezell as it's incredibly beautiful and there are some nice hiking possibilities. However I'm not sure that will be possible as a day trip if you're staying in Augsburg, as it's 4 - 5 hours travel time by train each way. If you could spend a few days there, that should be possible.
Hi Ken, thanks. I think you're right - an overnight there makes more sense.
Southern Germany and Austria also host the Alps, so there are closer options.

That's a great idea, Robert! Thanks for suggesting it!
I immediately thought of Appenzell too, but as others have said, It might be too much travelling. Another idea, especially if you can stay one night, is Salzburg, Austria. We left Augsburg late morning and arrived in Saltzburg in the mid-afternoon. Salzburg is charming and is surrounded by Alps.
