Northern Switzerland

My wife & I will be taking a vacation primarily in Bavaria, Germany, but we have since expanded it to include Colmar, France and northern Switzerland. We'll have a rental car and plan to be in Switzerland from the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 1 through the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 4.

We enjoy seeing natural sights such as going to the tops of mountains (via cable car, rail, and such; not hiking); lakes & valleys with towering mountains, waterfalls, and such; strolling & window shopping in old towns, whether in cities or smaller locales; flea markets; and good restaurants.

Based on our time frame, we have the ability to visit perhaps one and possibly two of the following:

Zurich
Lucerne
Schaffhausen
Stein am Rhein
and perhaps other sites near the above that people recommend

Traveling as far south a Lucerne would be our limit before we need to turn north and head for the Munich, Germany area.

Thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Starting where and ending in Munich? What is the order? Are you going from Colmar to northern Switzerland, or intermediate in northern Switzerland.

Sam, at present our itinerary is as follows:

Fly into Frankfurt & rent car. Nights in each are in parens...
Drive to Heidelberg (1), Colmar (2), somewhere in Switzerland (3), Liechtenstein for lunch (curious and want to say "I've been there, lol"), Munich (2), Rothenburg ob der Tauber (2), Nuremberg (2), then ditch the car and take train to Berlin (5), train to Frankfurt (1), fly home.

Total time frame is 20 days.

Thanks for your interest.

Then Luzern fits the bill as it has all of that.

Be sure to buy a vignette for your car as you enter Switzerland for 40 CHF.
