No more pizza at Camping Jungfrau and other Lauterbrunnen update

We always had a nice wood fired pizza at CF. For years in the restaurant and last year in the then-new-since-2019 Pizza Stall. Sadly, there is no longer pizza. Nor schnitzel. A friend inquired earlier this month and learned there is a new owner. Lots of changes. Lots of campers there, even this late in Sept.

Neither does the Hotel Oberland offer pizza any longer, although that may be a seasonal thing since last year we were here earlier and they only served it limited hours in their garden area.

The village has been extremely busy for the past two days (we just arrived). Trails are not bad, at least in the morning when we go (seize the day!), but the streets and train stations are back to 2019 levels. Locals report far more North American visitors than in years past and we are encountering lots of people from South Asia and Japan as well as other Asian countries. Smiles of delight from little kids (and adults) who had never seen snow before as overnight Friday there was a small snowfall that graced even Mürren and Wengen.

Thanks for the update. I had CF on my list of options for more affordable (and good!) dinner spots for a trip next summer.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Laurel, thanks for any info on the area, especially places to eat. We just arrived late this afternoon (missed the Cow Parade 😥). I agree that there seems to be a lot of tourists, but receptionist at our hotel said number of visitors peaked in July and August.

At Hotel Oberland's restaurant, on a Wednesday evening in early August, the waiter gave me a sheet of paper and said "We have a limited menu tonight."

You should not forget that we have a huge stortage on restaurant staff post covid. Many pizzaiolos (the pizza chefs) did not return after they went back to Italy during covid. Restaurants were closed for months; waiters and waitresses had to seek for another job and now work with other companies, such as online vendors and shipping companies, where they earn more and the job is more secure; this is all resulting in reduced menus, reservation obligation, and restaurant closures - unfortunately.

Hey Carol! There’s another alpabzug today by the Hotel Silberhorn, around midday I think. We saw the aftermath f the one from Wengen, i.e., the “debris trail” ion the street.

Roland, I certainly understand the staffing shortages everywhere. It must be VERY hard for the tourist-related service providers here as it is in the US. I did not mean to be critical in any way. I was merely pointing out to those who frequent this area that some things have changed. We spend time in the Lauterbrunnen Valley every year (except 2020!). In 2021, it was pretty quiet here even in early September with many travelers we encountered being the Swiss enjoying their own country. Restaurants were not stressed at all (it seemed) and we could get pizza at Camping Jungfrau. So this year it is very busy as more of the world is traveling and tour groups are returning.

Hi Laurel, I did not understood your post as criticism, nor was I debating. I just added my thoughts. I encountered the same problem in Zurich in July, where my friend and I met for dinner in Zurich, as we always do from time to time. We never reserve a table, we simply show up. But this time, we have checked 5 restaurants, all having had reduced the number of available tables due to lack of staff and were therefore fully booked.

Thanks Roland, for responding again. We even make dinner reservations at home these days because you never know what availability will be like. I learned in Italy many years ago that making reservations is a sign of respect for the establishment and you sometimes get a better table than a walk in does!

Guess I had better make reservations in Geneva in a few weeks!
