Night in Geneva

I am planning on spending a week in Switzerland and am ending in Geneva. I will only be there for an afternoon and evening before leaving in the morning.

One - if you only have an afternoon what is a must see?
Two - any great dinner suggestions? Doesn't have to be fancy.

Thanks!

We visited the United Nations office. Unfortunately all we got to see was the exterior because the president of China was there. Not sure if it was closed because of his visit or the demonstration outside (which was interesting). We toured CERN, if you enjoy science/physics, its a great stop, great tour, and its easy to get there by tram. You need to reserve the tour ten days in advance and they often fill. We also walked around the lake and downtown.

In addition to exactly what Jules did, we took a little walk up to the Reformation Monument Wall in the park at the University of Geneva if this interests you.

I'd rent free bikes (www.geneveroule.ch) and take them up to Calvin's church and then climb the bell tower there for a great view of the city and lake.

There's a nice serve-yourself restaurant in the Manor Dept. Store not far from the Cornavin train station.

When we visited, we just enjoyed walking around the lake and just sitting and people watching. I second the Manora restaurant.

If you want a fun dinner with Swiss Instruments and good food then look at the Hotel Manotel Edelweiss Restaurant. It's expensive, but it actually is fun. We've been there a couple of times.

Go to the Saint-Pierre Cathedral in the heart of the old city. When they were installing a heating system in the 70s they discovered ruins under the church. They kept digging and got down to the 1st century. It's all been excavated now and you can walk through...it's truly incredible what's down there. Takes about an hour and is well worth it!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will take some time to look at these in advance of going. :-)

And if you don't book ahead at the Manotel Edelweiss Restaurant you probably won't get in.
