New Swiss Transport 1 Day Pass is launched

https://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/1-day-travelpass/saver-day-pass.html

note that unlike the original day pass you don't need a Half Fare card. But beware, when you start to buy it assumes you have one and you have to select "no discount" to change the price.

Other differences are that it is now quota based and prices WILL rise, only available from 30 days in advance and basically no changes after purchase. Not available to buy on day of travel even if the quota hasn't sold out.

The bottom line cheapest possible without Half Fare card in 2nd class is 52 Francs but this will sell out fast for popular days.

Right now, the cheap 52 CHF passes begin 10 days out, inside 10 days the prices start to rise, so tomorrow through Monday, they are 106 EUR, then prices start to drop.

Signed up on the SBB website, downloaded the SBB app, and have Verified by Visa and still not able to purchase a 1 Day Pass via the SBB website- any ideas about how to purchase from the U.S.?

there have been reports of problems with US cards on the SBB site for some weeks and no-one has a clear answer why. Some say the cards work but the site is unstable, which is true in parts. Some say there is a dispute over/ restriction on card fees. Some say the site doesn't work with their card but the App does. Some say you first need to register with the card issuer because a website transaction will count as a foreign purchase, but if the App routes through ApplePay/AndroidPay account it isn't foreign when it reaches the card.

How do I get the transaction to route through Android Pay? That isn't an option on the SBB website and thank you for your help.

I've no idea, these are just ideas that were thrashed around. I can't believe that US cards are so hard to use elsewhere, it's interesting that the forum isn't swamped by complaints that the cards didn't work during visits.

One thing that occurs to me is that people usually plans their trips after they get home from work etc. Which mostly means evening. But evening in eastern USA is small hours of the morning in Europe - the time of day when systems are interrupted for maintenance and upgrades - and updating quotas. And knowing how software is developed I doubt whether every possible problem had the correct error message, especially on multi lingual websites.

I very much doubt there is a problem on the SBB site with Swiss or other European cards. If there were there would be screams of agony in the media. And, as Steve says "it's interesting that the forum isn't swamped by complaints that the cards didn't work during visits", i.e. there is no problem with transactions when the card is read, Just internet "card not present" transactions, just non-European cards and possibly just some of those.

As internet transactions from the US are only a tiny part of the website traffic, and it is difficult to identify the cause (so many links that could break), it is probably not a problem that shows up "on their radar".
The difficulty with fixing software problems is getting a good error report, so the error can be reproduced. Problems with transactions at the ticket counter with SBB staff prresent would rapidly get reported back by those SBB staff and fixed quicker.

Steve, the problem seems to be with on-line transactions. Cards have been working fine once we're on the ground in Europe. And it is spotty, just certain ones, SBB being the most notable. Could depend on which bank a firm uses to clear on-line transaction. I had a big transaction in January that was going through Unicredit, and it failed every time I tried to use the business' on-line payment page. I called and spoke with business on the phone, sent them my card info with an email, and they were able to process the transaction as if I were there at their ticket office. So the problem seems to be buried in the lines of code that vet the credit card.

Got my ticket for October. But there are clear design faults in the website. Once payment was cleared I got a screen with confirmed order number. It had links to display ticket or download PDF. The first went back to a journey planner screen. The second tried to get a file called order.pdf which wouldn't open. I checked my emails and there was a confirmation which is ready to use as a ticket if on a phone screen and contains another PDF link which downloaded a file with my name in the title and which works.
