Nervous Train Planning

Hi there! I am planning our trip to Switzerland and I feel excited except for the train situation.

I have read that I might need to book tickets for certain parts of this trip. Could someone clarify?
I thought in SWITZERLAND with a Swiss travel pass you can just hop on without reservations....... itinerary below.

Zurich to Grindelwald (train)
Grindelwald local travel during the day (bus)
Grindelwald to Wengen (train)
Hike to Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen to Wengen (tram)
Wengen to Montreux (train)- someone said this needs a special booking🤷‍♀️
Montreux to Basel (train)
Basel to Paris ( I know this is not included with the pass. But someone mentioned the "swiss part is covered" with the pass. What does that look like when booking tickets)
I am afraid I will end up spending money because I didn't plan well 😕
Please any help would be lovely!

Thank you so much

You look pretty good. A couple of points.

Grindelwald to Wengen (train)

You will have to Grindelwald to Zweiluetschinen to Lauterbrunnen to Wengen for this to be fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. If you want to go "over the top" via Kleine Scheidegg, you will have to buy a ticket as it is not covered with the STP. Show your pass and get a 25% discount. BTW, I think it will be worth it.

Wengen to Montreux (train)- someone said this needs a special booking🤷‍♀️

Going via the Golden Pass route does not require a reservation. They are available, mainly for groups who want to sit together or people who feel they must have a window seat.

Montreux to Basel (train)
Basel to Paris ( I know this is not included with the pass. But someone mentioned the "swiss part is covered" with the pass. What does that look like when booking tickets)

You can book a ticket to Paris from Montreux simply by stating you have a Swiss Travel Pass, it will deduct the Swiss portion of the cost. You can also get to Paris by going by way of Lausanne and bypass Basel, unless of course, you want to spend some time in Basel.

Oh. Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is a train, not a tram.

The majority of trains in Switzerland do not need (or even accept) reservations. The exceptions are some of the more scenic routes on special train cars with panoramic windows.

None of the trains around Grindelwald/Wengen take reservations. If you go up higher than Wengen or Grindelwald (Kleinne Scheidigg or First, for example), those trains are not covered 100% by the Swiss Travel Pass (STP), so you will need to buy a ticket at the discounted rate. You can do this on the SBB app.

The STP will cover you until Basel. For the train from Basel to Paris, you need to buy a separate ticket. You can use the SNCF app for that.

If you are worried about the correct train, you can use Google maps to confirm the SBB app information.

For your trip you are probably better of getting the Half Fare Card, and then getting a local pass for your time in Grindelwald. In Montreux you will get the Riviera card from your host.

And yes, Montruex - Paris does not require going via Basel.

Note about language: I know that in the US for some unknown reason a aerial cable car is called a "tram". Better not do that here as it confuses the locals.

Thank you so much for your help. Do I book from the trip from Lucerne to Paris to Lille France on the SBB site ? I am Looking at how much tickets cost and I am soooooo confused. I know this should be easier. Sorry for my ignorance.

It is saying 142 Swiss Franks on the SBB site ........ is this for the entire journey????......

I am just making sure this is a ticket for the entire journey or is this 142 only for the swiss part. Do I have to buy another separate ticket for the travel from Geneva on TGV? Sorry again.

What is your route to Paris? First you said Basel to Paris, then just above you say Lucerne to Paris, then you throw in Geneva. And where does Lille fit in? After Paris?

I don't know when you are traveling, but I just checked Montreux to Paris for October 5. departing at 6:48 am via Lausanne, arriving at 11:08 am, with a Swiss Travel Pass, cost is 64 CHF for a nonrefundable ticket, or 124 CHF flexible ticket.

Hi there,
The SBB app or website doesn't allow you to buy international tickets. Mostly, they'll let you buy a ticket from your departure point to the closest Swiss town to the border. I know that it's not easy either if you plan to buy the tickets using the counterpart railway operator, in this case the French, and you might end up with the same problem, having tickets only to the border.
While you are in Switzerland, this can be easily solved by going to an SBB office and they can sell you the tickets for the entire journey.
Have fun in Switzerland!
