Needing Current ATM Information For Mürren, or close by, Please

I am traveling from Salzburg to Mürren next month (by train) with no time in between connections to stop at an ATM for Swiss francs. I just want to be sure what I am reading is up-to-date information. From my research, it sounds like the ATM in Lauterbrunnen station is closed, there is one at the Schilthorn cableway station in Mürren, and Hotel Edelweiss, also Mürren, will exchange euros for Swiss francs for a fee (not ideal, but good to know if I am desperate). I checked with my local bank to get 100 CHF and their fee was $30…no thank you.

There is an EKI Bank ATM directly across the street from the Lauterbrunnen station in front of the Coop. It's the one I always use. Never an issue and always a good exchange rate.

Just returned from four days in Murren. I did "see" an ATM sign on the main drag towards the Coop but have no ideal if it was working. As an aside, we stayed in Murren four nites and did not spend a bit of cash. All hotels, meals and tickets were electronic on the cell phone.

Thanks, bimmerboyd, I'll look for that ATM.

John, I found a restaurant we want to try and it's cash only. Also, we are hoping to come across some Farm Fridges on our hikes and need cash to insert into a lock box for some of them if we make a purchase. But thank you for your reply.

The ATM in the Schilthornbahn up in Murren works. But you really don’t NEED cash here. The only things I use cash for are the self service cheese fridges and even some of them now take credit card. It wouldn’t be difficult for me to go a whole summer here without cash if I wasn’t buying so much cheese :)

Thanks for the humor wanderweg! I realize I really don't NEED cash, but I WANT cash, especially if I come across one of those cheese fridges that do not take a credit card. It sounds like we are both lovers of cheese and imagine you find a cheese, in a fridge, you really, really want to try but they only allow payment by cash and all you have is a credit card? Sad face. Playing it safe with cash so I am not disappointed.

And John, even though you said you did not need cash, I read a post of yours in another thread you initially withdrew 300 CHF, then went on to say "If I was to repeat I would get 100 CHF in 20's". Lol! Thank you for saying so succinctly what I want to do. ;o) And I'll be sure to further investigate the ATM sign you saw on the main drag in Murren.

There is also a Raiffeisen Bank next to the Interlaken Ost train station with an ATM. You can take a break here on the way to Muerren, as the next train to Lauterbrunnen will be 30 minutes after your scheduled connection.

The ATM sign he’s referring to is pointing to the only ATM in Murren - at the Schilthornbahn cable car station. We spend our summers living here so I promise you there is no other :) Up until last year there wasn’t one at all up here. And for a fellow cheese lover - the best cheese fridge is on the road behind the Coop/Hotel Regina (on the way to Gimmelwald in “lower” Murren) :) They accept credit card. We also like the one at Winteregg and one in Gimmelwald that you walk inside their home to get to. It’s about half way down the main road on the left. You walk up a little walkway and into their barn/house.

Wanderweg, are these cheese stations you refer to on the walk down from Murren to Gimmelwald?

The reason I ask is that it is a big request of my husband to visit one of these farm fridges, and we do hope to that walk, at least the relatively easy paved one.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, starting in Murren on the paved walk to Gimmelwald there is a great one at the very beginning behind Hotel Regina. Then in Gimmelwald there are atleast 5 or 6 along the road, maybe more. It will be hard to not find them, they’re everywhere :)

Thank you Sam, I will look for that Bank/ATM before we catch the train to Lauterbrunnen.

And thanks again, wanderweg, and for sharing the best cheese fridge plus another favorite of yours. We will definitely stop by and purchase some cheese...with a credit card ;o)

Shellie, like you I found for the first time on this trip (in over 30) I don't need cash......but I still want cash :) My tradition has been to draw out local currency (still have some Francs and Lira!) for miscellaneous expenses, guides, munchies occasional tips and places that did not take cc, but was amazed this time that cash really was not needed. At age 74 not as adventuresome as before, only saw one cheese box in Gimmelwald. The 300CHF I withdrew at 1st I found myself looking for opportunites to spend at the end of our stay. We only "hike" downhill!! Did four "hikes" on this trip - amazing!! Enjoy your trip.

Thanks wanderweg, we'll look out for them and make sure we have cash.

I just got 40 CHF today to give us something to start with. When buying using Australian dollars it is mighty expensive!

I stayed in Murren for a week and didn't use any CF cash. The only time I had to pay cash to buy beer at a mountain hut, they accepted USD. I gave them a little extra to cover the exchange rate.
