Need imput on travel with roughly 1-2 days free

First and foremost I appreciate any input /suggestions regarding my travel

Dates in Switzerland - 6/16 - 6/22

Most of my days will be spent on business in Lugano but will have a 1-2 days with overnight stay to do some sight seeing.
I would really like to check out Zermatt (Matterhorn) or Jungrfraujoch. Most likely purchase a Swiss travel pass for transportation. I've looked into trains with roughly a 5 hr. travel time each way to either destinations. Here are my concerns:

  • Is it worth taking 5 hrs. each way (train) to suggested spots and stay one night, will I have enough time there only to come back late next day?
  • Weather forecast shows afternoon thunderstorms , or rain/snow during the week. Do I just need to check the webcams or ask locals how the weather might fare?
  • Any other suggestions on other places (hidden gems) to visit that might not take that long of a train ride?

I'd skip the J. It's only worth going up there if the weather is clear, which usually happens before noon which will be before you're able to get there given the 5-hour commute (from Wengen it's another hour+ to the J). But if you really want to see it, consider staying overnight in Wengen and going up first thing in the morning. Then return to Lugano. But you will be gambling the weather cooperates.

Maybe spend the day in Luzern. It's only 2 hours away and a great town.

I have to question whether Swiss Rail Pass will provide any real value to you for such a short time. Make sure you price your itinerary out both ways once you have decided on your plans.
