Need Ideas

I’m trying to complete my itinerary but stuck at the moment. I’ll be arriving at ZRH and will spend the next 3 days in Zermatt. I will leave Zermatt on Sep 1st but can’t figure out where to go next until my return flight on Sep 5th (4 days), also from ZRH.

Thinking about these options:

  1. Head to Lauterbrunnen and make my home base there. I would have done enough hiking in Zermatt but still want to take in the scenery in the area, but is 4 days too many?

  2. Take a roundabout way to Lucerne via the Glacier Express to Andermatt and to Lucerne and make my home base there. Do a day trip from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen and other day trips somewhere close by - not sure where yet. Is this feasible?

  3. Head west toward Geneva? But not sure if I have time.

I’ll be traveling solo so very flexible. My main goal is to take in the scenery and relax and not necessarily doing anything.

I would want to end up in Lucerne so I could take the train to Zurich airport for my flight out.

My first choice would be to spend the nights of Sept. 1, 2, and 3, in Murren, Wengen, or Lauterbrunnen, and the night of the 4th in Lucerne.

My second choice would be to spend those last 4 nights in Lucerne. There’s plenty there to keep you busy.

I agree with Carrie. Both the Berner Oberland ( Murren,Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, etc) and Lucerne are excellent choices.

Logistically, you could go from Zermatt to the Berner Oberland first in 2.5 hours and stay 2-3 nights.
Then you could take the spectacular train ride from Lauterbrunnen to Lucerne over the Brunig Pass and overnight in Lucerne. Lucerne puts you less than one hour away from Zurich’s airport with direct trains doing the journey— no need to overnight in Zurich the night before your return flight home.

If you do choose the Berner Oberland— make hotel reservations ASAP because this year is really busy there and hotels have been rapidly booking up.

Have a great trip!

I ended up booking a hotel in Wengen for 3 nights. Now I need to decide if I want to end my trip in Lucerne or Zurich.

I’m leaning toward Lucerne to avoid the big city atmosphere, but I also want to do a chocolate tour. Is there anything comparable to Lindt in Lucerne?

You can easily get to the Lindt museum from Lucerne. My favorite part of the museum was the café and the giant store. I would skip it and just buy some Lindt chocolate balls in Lucerne.

BTW, if you want a scenic route from Zermatt to Wengen, go via Kandersteg on the Loetchberger train (RE 1) from Brig to Spiez. It will take about an hour longer, but worth it if you are not in a huge hurry.
