My 11 Day Switzerland Itinerary

I will have 11 days to travel Switzerland post the Tour Mont Blanc hike starting on July 17. Here is my tentative itinerary. I need to fly back from Geneva to the US on July 28 9 am. Do you think the itinerary makes sense? Should I stay in another town in Lake Geneva area such as Lausane? If I stay at Lausanne, can I stay at Lausanne on my last night to catch the 9 am flight in Geneva? Should I reduce the Wengen stay to 3 nights (Instead of 4) to give one night to Zermatt or Luzern? Should I add another location?

Day date Sleep
1 7/17/24 Zermatt
2 7/18/24 Zermatt
3 7/19/24 Luzern
4 7/20/24 Luzern
5 7/21/24 Wengen
6 7/22/24 Wengen
7 7/23/24 Wengen
8 7/24/24 Wengen
9 7/25/24 Montreux (?? may be Lausane)
10 7/26/24 Montreux (?? may be Lausane)
11 7/27/24 Geneva (?? may be Lausane)
12 7/28/24. Leave Geneva to US (9am flight)
Thank you so much for your help.

I'm only going to address you taking a day from Wengen. DON'T do it! It will be the highlight of your trip! 2 nights is plenty for Luzern. I haven't been to Zermatt, but I've been to the Berner Oberland 4 times, adding more time to each trip as even 4 nights was not enough.

No one is ever ready to leave the Berner Oberland, so don't take days away from Wengen. I'd actually skip Zermatt entirely and spend more time in charming Lucerne and fantastic Wengen.
Wherever yo go in the beautiful country, you'll have a wonderful time. Safe travels!

I think it looks pretty good. We already discussed Chamonix to Zermatt rail trip from your previous post

Alternate route for Zermatt to Luzern, Zermatt to Brig to Bern (via Kandersteg) to Luzern (via Langnau i.E.) This will take an extra 2 hours over going the fast way using the Loetschberg Base Tunnel and the IR train to Luzern that goes the long way distance wise but the fastest way time wise. It all depends if you want maximum scenery or fastest travel time.

Wengen to Montreux via Zweisimmen is another scenic route.

You could stopover at Lausanne on the way to Geneva.

Ticket strategy: Get the 30-day Half Fare Card for 120 CHF a 4-day Berner Oberland Pass for 196 CHF, and Saver Day Pass for use on 7/17 and 7/19.
You can buy the Saver Day Passes now for 39 CHF for 2nd class with the Half Fare Card. Note that you do not need to buy the Half Fare Card now, just have it bought by your first travel date and have it in your possession when you travel. Saver Day Passes must be used on the day they were purchased for.
You get a discount on the Berner Oberland Pass with the Half Fare Card.

Note also that seat reservations are recommended for the trip from Wengen to Montreux if you use one of the trains that are direct from Interlaken Ost to Montreux. Trains that require a connection at Zweisimmen don't carry this recommendation.

I think the question is what are you hoping to do? More hiking? Water activities? Cities? This would affect my choices on where I went and how long I was there. I think 5 places is too many for 12 days.

For a 9 am flight I think it might be dicey to stay outside of Geneva, as you need to be to the airport by 6–7 am at the latest. If you’re wanting to do more hiking I might skip Montreux. If you’re wanting to add in a more city like place, then maybe remove Zermatt.

Maybe something like…
Luzern - 3 nights
Wengen - 5 Nights
Zermatt or Montreux- 2 Nights
Geneva - 1 Night
Or
Luzern - 4 Nights
Wengen - 6 Nights
Geneva - 1 Night

I still think your plan is a good one. Three 2-night stands, one 4-night stand and a 1-night stand before the flight home.
I just got done with an 8 night trip, 3-nights in Saas Fee, 3-nights in Zermatt, 1 night in Luzern and 1-night in Zurich airport. I--had--a--blast!

thank you great points. Since I have been hiking Mont Blanc for 10 days prior to Switzerland trip, probably reduce the hiking time in Switzerland, and add one or two cities in the trip. If I add one city, which one to add (Bern / Zurich and others), should I used Wengen or Luzern as base or I should stay in the city of a night or two?

If I have to select Montreux and Zermatt given I have been hiking in Mont Blanc for 10 days, which one should I pick?

Thank you!

biwang I wouldn't assume that you won't want to do any hiking. The Berner Oberland is a hikers paradise and there are many shortish 1-3 hr hikes that will give you incredible views without being too strenuous as you can ride gondolas / trains to get the elevation then hike pretty much level or even down.

Thank you Jill. I'm a runner as well. would like to have some trail run in BO. Does anyone have any recommendations / suggestions on the best trail running routes in BO? I will stay in Wengen.
Thanks,

You will travel during peak of the peak season. Your itinerary looks fine. However, I strongly suggest you secure hotel bookings ASAP. In fact, in some locations, most of the options offering the best value may be booked up.

Saas Fee is in the next valley east of Zermatt. It has a great glacier to ski on and a revolving restaurant on a peak at the top. It can only be reached by bus from Visp or Stalden, but they are frequent.

And I will say that Zermatt is a really special place if the weather cooperates. IMHO
