We will be spending approximately 10 days in Switzerland (traveling by train), then would like to take the train from Mürren to Vienna. As it is a long trip, can anyone recommend a location to spend the night (and possibly part of a day) between Mürren and Vienna to break up the long trip?

Innsbruck or Salzburg.
Both are stops on the rail route from Zürich to Vienna, which is the quickest route. Mürren to Vienna is complicated with lots of changes until you get to Zürich, then it is one train the rest of the way to Vienna.

When travelling from Mürren to anywhere, you'll first have to get to Interlaken Ost via the BLM railway and cable car, and then local train from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost. That trip will add about an hour to the other portion of your journey.
One intermediate location you might consider is Munich, which is about 6.5 hours from Interlaken, depending on which train you choose. The trip from Munich to Vienna is as short as 3H:56M if you use one of the direct trains. There's LOTS to see and do in Munich and you won't have any trouble keeping busy.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I think we will consider stopping in either Innsbruck or Munich (having spent several days in Salzburg 2 years ago).
