Murren - Bad weather next week - alternate ideas?

Hi all -

My mom and I have booked a cabin in Murren next Sunday-Wednesday, and the forecast is showing all rain/snow. We were planning to spend our days hiking and enjoying the alps, but if the weather holds up we dont want to be stuck inside all day the whole trip. We both will have Swiss passes - if this does happen, are there other places/towns within an hour or 2 train ride that you would suggest us going to check out? We just dont want the trip to be completely ruined if weather is bad!

Thanks!
Ilana

There's no weather forecaster in the world that can accurately predict the weather in Murren for more than a couple of days out. It's impossible because it's so high up. It's mountain weather and has its own microclimate. Where did you get this forecast?

I looked at the weather in the surrounding areas on weather.com, looks like rain is predicted everywhere. Chamonix, Zermatt, Bern, Interlaken....Geneva looks somewhat better. I've been to Murren and the surrounding area and I don't remember much for indoor things to do. Seems like an outdoor paradise, we are hikers so we weren't looking for indoor things to do, though. I would probably get out my Gore Tex and try and make the best of it. We went to Trummelbach Falls- which is inside the rock so out of the rain, we took the tram up to the Schilthorn. Zermatt has the ice sculptures inside the glacier up on Klein Matterhorn.
Fingers crossed the weather takes a turn for the better for you and your mom!

I'm seeing "a couple of showers" and "periods of rain" when I look at the hourly forecast. We went to Wengen last September, and the forecast was cold & rain. Well, I purchased a good Columbia rain jacket from Amazon & bought a pair of tights to wear under my pants (and brought a micro-thin thermal top.) We hiked every day....and only one of the days wasn't nice. The mountains were covered in clouds when we arrived and just improved each day! Just be ready with layered clothes and keep going.

If the weather gets really ugly, there's some museums in Interlaken (haven't been to them), Trummelbach Falls is interesting.

Thanks everyone - yes it just seems like the whole region will be rainy - will purchase a good rain jacket and hope for the best. Appreciate the suggestions!

I agree with Tim. We were in the Lauterbrunnen valley last year at this time and found the weather changed rapidly.

This was what the entrance to the valley looked like at 0800 on May 23rd.

This was what it looked like at 1100 when we emerged from the Trummelbach Falls cave entrance

This is what it looked like from the Schilthorn at 1300.

A lightweight jacket and a lightweight rain jacket were very handy - something you can fold up and stash in a backpack when you don't need them and then pull out when you do. Along with some Cuddle-Duds and we were comfy no matter what.

It's a beautiful place - Have Fun!

It's just impossible to predict alpine weather.

Bruce, those three images are incredible. My family and I will be there for the first time on July 9-10, and we hope the weather allows for such views, hiking and the occasional wander into local dairies along the North Face trail. For all the anticipation and planning that go into these itineraries, WEATHER is the one variable out of our control. Does anyone know the steps for anti-raindance?

If the weather is cooperating in the Lauterbrunnen everybody is an Ansel Adams :-)

or you could do a day trip to Bern and back. Their claim to fame is almost all the sidewalks are inside arcades so they're covered. And you'll be near Lake Thun for a ways so it's pretty.

PS- I'm not sure what the conditions are like in Switzerland, but I've been monitoring the mountain webcams in Austria for the past week. It looks like the winter snow pack has lingered quite late this year, and there's even been fresh snow in many locations recently. No idea what it's like at Mürren's elevation, though (probably wet, but not snowy).

This sort of drives home a valid point that's been made over and over again on this website- you're really going against the odds if you attempt a "The Hills are Alive" sort of Alpine visit before mid June.
