Murren in early December?

Hello! First time poster, thanks in advance for your help! We will be arriving in Switzerland around Dec 8 and were planning to head to the Berner Oberland and stay in Murren. After checking hotels and finding that many (Eiger, Bellevue) don't open for the winter season until Dec. 14-19, I'm wondering if we should visit prior to the true start of the season? It is my husband and I traveling, and we are just there for the mountain scenery (not skiing). There are some lodging options available, but will restaurants, etc. be open as well? Are we just visiting too early? Unfortunately we have to be home by Dec. 15, so later in December is not an option. I also understand the weather can be an issue with visibility, so does that combined with being early in the season mean we should stay in Luzerne (or somewhere else?) instead and just take a day trip if weather is good? Or should we stick with our original plan to stay in Murren?

Assuming you still recommend we go to Berner Oberland, maybe I should be asking if it is best for us to stay in Murren, or is that committing us to a location too much and maybe given our limited time should say in Lauterbrunnen for easier access to both sides? We will be there 3 nights/4 days, then going to Luzerne before flying home from Zurich.

Thanks!!

Jenn,

That's probably not the best time-of-year to be visiting the Berner Oberland. While you'll be able to see the mountain scenery (subject to visibility and weather), I suspect it's going to be "quiet". If you want to stay in that area and take day trips, you might consider staying in Lauterbrunnen or even Interlaken. Interlaken is a larger city, so there should be hotels open. Lauterbrunnen is the transportation hub for the valley, so it's easy to get from there to either side of the valley. For hotels in Lauterbrunnen, you might contact Hotel Oberland to see if they'll be open then. They have a really good restaurant (although as with anywhere in Switzerland, it's a bit pricey).

As you appear to have six days, you might consider staying a couple of days in Lauterbrunnen and the rest in Lucerne (which is one of my favourite cities in Switzerland). While there you could take a trip to the top of Mt. Pilatus, which has more great views.

It WILL be ski season in the Berner Oberlnd. You will probably find the cheapest hotel prices of the season. Consider the half board option (breakfast and dinner) as it is a great value.
You don't have to ski while you are there. The lifts will be running. Maybe a sled run will be open for a thrill.

I was there December 2017 about a week before Christmas, and I've never seen so much snow! We rented sleds and warm clothes and zoomed down the slopes and trails from Almendhubel all the way to Gimmelwald - TWICE! It was so much fun. Personally I would not recommend half board - yes, I know it can be economical, but it's lots of fun to just drop in at various restaurants for a snack or drink or dessert. We did half board one year and it was just boring.

We stayed in the Lauterbrunnen Valley for four days mid January. There was A LOT of snow and it snowed most of the time we were there. Visibility was often an issue so watch the cameras to see if it really makes sense to do things like go up to Jungfrau or Schilthorn. A few of the restaurants that we were interested in were closed in Murren and there were no food options in Gimmelwald (though its a very charming little village and still worth walking thru) Everything was open in Lauterbrunnen. I wouldn't consider a day trip to BO from Luzern because you would have no idea what the weather is like until you get to BO. I was happy we stayed in BO the four days because we did then have some times with visibility and lovely views. People really like Murren, but I liked being in Lauterbrunnen Valley because it provided more flexibility in terms of places to go. Wengen is close from Lauterbrunnen but would take a bit more effort from Murren. We rented sledges in Murren which was a lot of fun. We are skiers and though we were on the sledges it was fun to see what some of the ski runs looked like. We went to Grindelwald, too, but I was less impressed with that area in comparison to Lauterbrunnen. Also, I remember watching the weather for a month or so before we went on our trip, and I recall there wasn't much snow at all in December that year. I'm told you never really know what to expect.
