Murren

We will be staying in Murren for 3 days in September and I was wondering if anyone has some recommendations on what to see and do? Food recommendations are welcome... I know this is a broad question, but anything will help. Thank you.

Hi Joanne, Murren is a wonderful destination and very popular on this forum so you'll probably get lots of recommendations. My favorite place for dinner is the Eiger Guesthouse (across from the train station). Also try the Hotel Bellevue, Hotel Jungfrau, and Hotel Alpenruh. Try brunch at the top of the Schilthorn. All offer great local dishes and good service. If you are planning a walk or hike, you can pick up sandwiches and snacks at the Coop.

What to do? Take the cable car up to the Schilthorn (stop at Birg to do the Thrill Walk on the way down), hike or bike to Gimmelwald or Trummelbach Falls, or just sit on your balcony or a bench and enjoy the view. Take the train to the Jungfrau. So much to see and do. The entire area is breathtakingly beautiful, you will love it!

Joanne,

The previous suggestions for sightseeing are good ones, but some of them will be a bit pricey, especially the Jungfraujoch and to a lesser extent the trip to the Schilthorn. The views and the experience of travel to those two locations is worth the cost (IMO). Be sure to budget accordingly.

The Schilthorn was used in the filming of the James Bond movie, On Her Majesty's Secret Service back in the '60s, so it's very famous. There's a small James Bond museum of sorts at the top. The facility is also a revolving restaurant and you could also sample a "Martini shaken not stirred" while you're there.

There are other good suggestions for hiking and other activities in the RS Switzerland guidebook. If you're interested in a short hike, you could take the Allmend-Hubel Funicular to the top and then hike (stroll) back down to Mürren.

One minor point to mention about the Jungfraujoch is that the facility is at 12,000 feet+. If you've ever experienced any altitude-related issues, that's something to keep in mind.

We had dinner at the Eiger Guest House and it was delicious. To help you estimate costs, it came to 40 CHF a person for dinner and dessert, no alcohol.

We had good dinners at Hotel Edeweiss, Eiger Guesthouse, Stägerstübli, and a nice picnic dinner from the Coop. We also enjoyed the brunch at the Schilthorn. The Schiltorn is easy to access from Mürren, and there are many great hikes/walks in the area.
