Munich to Gimmelwald

Hi Everyone! My husband and I are planning on our first trip to Europe together and would like to travel from Munich to Gimmelwald in a day. We bought Eurail passes to make things a little easier but are not sure how much travel time we need to budget for this leg of the journey. From what I found online the travel times vary between 5-11.5 hours by train. Does anyone have recommendations on the quickest trains/connections we can take to get from Munich to Gimmelwald?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Most of the better train connection options take between 7 and 8.5 hours, depending on whether the first leg is by train (slower) or bus (direct from Munich to Zurich). The DB buses departing from München ZOB (Hackerbrücke), e.g. one at 9:00 a.m., are operated by the railway and covered by your rail pass, but require a seat reservation, about 4 euros at a train station within Germany. Use the Deutsche Bahn at Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online for the most complete info.

If I were travelling that route, I'd probably use this method.....

  • 09:03 - Bus from Munich Hackerbrücke to Zürich Carpark Sihlquai, arriving 12:45.
  • Walk from the Zürich bus stop across to the main rail station (you can see it from the bus stop, not a difficult walk).
  • 13:02 - train from Zürich to Bern, arriving 13:58.
  • 14:04 - train from Bern to Interlaken Ost, arriving 14:57 (it's the second station in Interlaken).
  • 15:05 - train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen, arriving 15:25. Be sure to check the small digital display on the side of the Berner Oberlandbahn to ensure the end destination is Lauterbrunnen and not Grindelwald.
  • 15:35 - Post Bus (bright yellow, you can't miss it) from Lauterbrunnen station to Stechelberg, arriving 15:47.
  • 15:55 - Schilthornbahn cable car to Gimmelwald, arriving 16:00.

There's a similar (but not exactly the same) departure leaving Munich at 06:33, that will get you to Gimmelwald at 13:30. I always like to enjoy the breakfast I've paid for at the hotel, so prefer departures after 09:00. There are numerous other departures, with longer travel times. You can see all the solutions on the Bahn.de website.

If you decide on the earlier departure, head to the Munich station early and pick up a sandwich & coffee (or whatever) for breakfast. There are lots of food stands in the station.

If you bought a Eurail Pass, you need to stop at Interlaken Ost station and buy tickets, for a 25% discount for the rest of the way. The pass is not valid from there to Gimmelwald, just get a discount.

Your Eurail Passes are not going to make anything easier...sorry for the bad news. And I don't find any public transportation that takes only 5 hours for your journey. The quickest route I find via bahn.de is 6 hrs 57 mins.

Thank you for all your helpful responses! This leg of our trip is the longest but I'm sure it will be well worth it!
Thanks again!
