We are heading of on our 1st European trip and have just to finalise our middle section.travel which will be Jan 4 - Jan 7
We are coming Munich to Murren and booking with DBahn looks a great deal- we are taking the quicker option of bus Munich to zurich( hoping this will be ok) departures seem to suit us better and is about 1 hour in general quicker. The bus terminals look fairly close to train departures??
We have purchased Swiss 1 month half fare as we have 2 child age 15&13 so they will be free for other travel in Switzerland but when I try to book any train tickets online they seem to come up 1/2 price.... My enquiries seem to say I don't need tickets for them just show family card with their names..... This makes me a little nervous that we have pre booked tickets and just bring them along!!! Can you confirm how this may work?? When we leave Lauterbrunnen to lake Como I'm having trouble seeing if this route is possible or will we have to go to Milan and back to Como..?? We are staying close to Como Nord so would prefer to arrive at that station.thank you would appreciate any suggestions
Look carefully and the prices say "from.." and this is just like advertising in the States. "From.." doesn't mean that is the offer price, it means it could be the offer price under certain conditions. In this case, the condition is that you have a Half Fare card. Most Swiss have Half Fare Cards they get on a annual basis, so it is for their benefit. If you don't have a Half fare card, the prices are double that for you. But you already said you are getting one, so no worries.
Most trains do not need to be prebooked except special tourist excursion trains like the Glacier Express or Bernina Express. So just buy tickets at the Half Fare price and when the conductor checks tickets, show him/her your ticket, your Half Fare card, your Family Card and your ID.
Kaitlin, Are you trying to "book" rail tickets for Switzerland?
You can't and don't need to book. If you have a Swiss half price card, you just buy half price tickets on the day, either from the ticket machine, or from the manned sales counter.
There is no discount for advance purchase of rail tickets in Switzeralnd, and no seat reservation, just buy a ticket and get on the next train.
Where are you looking for times and prices, I hope it is the Swiss Railways site ( http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html ). This will show by default the price withe a half price card, which is correct for you. You can see other prices by clicking on the prices button.
Details about childrens fares are here: http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/children.html
You can either pay half price for them, or buy a one-day card for CHF 16, or a one-year Junior travelcard for CHF 30. Ypou can buy all these at your first station when you arrove in Switzerland (Zürich Hbf).
You can look up Lauterbrunnen to Como on the SBB website, but you must enter the name of the actual town you are going to.
