Mt Pilatus advice

We plan to spend one day going up to Mt Pilatus from Lucerne in a couple of weeks. A few questions:

My daughter wants to do the ropes course and possibly the toboggan run. We also want to go to the top, of course. Somewhere in there we want to eat lunch.

What is the best way to logistically get from one spot to another? I want to be cognizant of lines for the toboggan run too, so I'm thinking that should happen earlier in the day?

Restaurant recommendations?

I've only done it once, but here's what I did.

  1. Early train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad in order to be on first cogwheel train up the mountain.
  2. Spend about 2 hours at the top of Mt. Pilatus. Nice to be up there for awhile before it got crowded.
  3. Cable car down to Frakmuntegg.
  4. Ride tobaggan. Maybe a 20 minute wait in line.
  5. Blissful lunch outside at cafeteria type restaurant at Frakmuntegg. Had my first Rivella.
  6. (I didn't do rope course, but it's right next to restaurant). Not sure how much time this would add to journey
  7. Cable car down to Kriens.
  8. Bus back to Lucerne.
  9. Back in Lucerne mid-afternoon.

Fun day. Nice views from top of Mt. Pilatus.

Did this last September. We bought the "Golden Round Trip" which is a boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then we took the cog rail up to Pilatus. It was pretty cold with snow on the ground so we didn't stay much more than an hour. It looks like there are a few restaurants on Mt Pilatus. Aerial cableway to Frakmuntegg (restaurant here) and then gondola to Kriens and bus back to Lucerne. We took the first boat of the day and we were back in Lucerne in the early afternoon. We ate when we got back to Lucerne. Here is the website that explains the trips available to Mt Pilatus as well as the fares.

The boat trip up the lake was very scenic and I'd recommend it. It does take about an hour. We bought first class tickets which has a seating area inside where you can buy drinks and also a deck outside for viewing. The rest of the trip was scenic as well although we were trying to beat the rain so our views were sometimes cloudy and sometimes clear. Also, the toboggans do not run in the rain. We didn't do the ropes course.

Have fun!

Kat,

I'd also suggest the trip from Lucerne to Alphnachstad by boat, and then the Funicular to the top. You might consider having lunch at one of the restaurants on Mt. Pilatus, as that will provide some great views and they may even have an authentic Swiss band playing in the cafeteria. The dining room at Pilatus-Kulm seemed more formal and expensive, while Hotel Bellevue has a nice cafeteria where one can get a fine hot meal for a reasonable price. Here's a link that shows your options for dining - https://www.pilatus.ch/en/discover/restaurants/all-restaurants/ . For "recommendations", I enjoyed the self-serve restaurant at Bellevue and would certainly recommend it.

After lunch take the cable car down to Fräkmüntegg and the attractions you want to visit. After that take the next cable car to Kriens, walk downhill to the bus station and you'll be back in Lucerne in 15-20 minutes.
