I;m doing best of switzerland in June and we only are in Zermatt 1 day maybe 1/2 a day... and there are optional excursion for four mountain lifts to see Matterhorn (each lift offers a different view) question.. does one need advance tickets for these lifts?
The problem with advance tickets is not knowing the weather, (and I'm not sure advance tickets are even sold. Someone will chime in. ) Do you want to pay to see a cloud bank?
We were on this wonderful tour in 2017, and trust me, you will see so many fantastic peaks, I actually thought the Matterhorn was just a so-so experience, compared to the others.
Have a fantastic time!
You can walkup and buy your tickets at the base. At least we did at the height of ski season, no problem. Here is the website in case you want to book in advance; https://www.zermatt.ch/en/Lifts-pistes.
Ditto, you want to wait until the day of to go based on weather. It is not something that sells out.
The traditional view is the one from the town. Chances of a totally clear view ( based n my limited experience ) is 33%.
Thank you for all your well informed replies! You guys totally answered my question!
The Gornergrat has the best high altitude view of the Matterhorn. But agreed, don't buy tickets until you know that it's clear that day. If it is clear, on the way up get a seat on the right side of the train for best views going up over the town of Zermatt. Ride all the way to the top for the view and then make stops on the way down for optional small side hikes.
