Hi,
Have you gone to Mount Titlis? I am thinking of going early August. I am open to other suggestions. I want ''the view'' and the on top of the world feeling I guess. I won't have much time for hiking on this trip (going to Portugal and trying to pack light).
I have seen all inclusive day trips from Zurich but I may want to do it on my own. I tend to think tours are ''slow paced'' and perhaps doing it on my own would be more affordable.
I would appreciate any comments on your experience out there.
Thanks!
Titlis is definately recommended. At 3000 metres it is one of the few places you can get above the snow line in summer, just by cable cars. You go up from Engelberg in a series of 3 cablecars. At the top is the usual building with a restaurant and souvenir shop. There is a small glacier, which you can go inside (a cave is cut into it), and you can go outside in the snow. the views are spectacular. A chairlift takes you OVER the glacier, you look down into the crevices. The thin air makes you feel euphoric.
See www.titlis.ch for more info.
I assume from what you say you are staying in Zürich. I am not sure an all inclusive trip is a good idea. it is easy enough to do by train, and this leaves you lots of flexibility. Trains Luzern - Engelberg run hourly then a 10 minute walk to the bottom of the first cable car. You can get off and walk round between cable cars. Train Zürich HB to Engelberg costs CHF 72 return (2nd class, no railcard).
The cable car itself costs CHF 89 Engelberg - TITLIS return. Total CHF 161 plus food.
Swiss public transport is so slick and well coordinated that I would not consider a tour. Train from Zurich to Engelberg takes under 2 hours each way, with a connection in Luzern.
Super easy to do on your own. Just returned from there! I strongly suggest it to anyone going near Zurich and looking for a day trip.
Thanks again for the advice!
