While in Lucerne, we'd like to take a day trip to one of the nearby mountains. I really like the look of the trip to Mount Stanserhorn - especially the open top Cabrio cable car.
So is it worth a day trip?
Or are the other mountains like Pilatus and Titlis better?
We really liked Stanserhorn… especially the open air cabrio. There is a restaurant and large outside deck along with hiking trails leading from the restaurant. The view is amazing. Also they have candlelight dinners Friday and Saturday from early May to early November in their revolving restaurant.
Yes, the Cabrio is unique, it is worth it!
By the way, Pilatus can be done as a half-day trip, so perhaps you have time for it as well.
Stanserhorn is a quick train and cable car trip from Lucerne [about 45 min total]. It's not a whole day expedition. I loved it, and we did the trip for the sunset and drinks on the terrace. You could easily do Mt. Rigi in the morning, rest in the afternoon for a few hours, and do Stanserhorn in the evening. I chose Rigi because the trips to both Rigi and Stanserhorn are completely free with the Swiss Travel Pass, and the hour boat ride to the Rigi cogwheel train is so pleasant. The Rigi trip took us about 4 hrs [boat 1 hr each way, cogwheel train 20-30 minutes each way.]
The outdoor cable car is great, and you can hear the cowbells in the pastures underneath.
Safe travels!
I also recommend Stanserhorn Cabrio. It reopens sometime in April 2022. I say that because I was in Stans in December and we thought we'd go up but everything was all wrapped up tight for the winter.
It won't take a whole day. We went up in the morning, and then drove up to Engelberg for lunch, and we were back in Luzern late afternoon.
