We will be in Luzern at the beginning of June and would like to take a day trip to either Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.
Depends on the travel pass you have, if you have one. With the STP, the beautiful boat ride and cogwheel train to Rigi are all covered.
With the Half-fare card, you'll have to check the discounts to each summit.
Personally , I prefer Rigi because of the delightful one hour boat ride each way.
Have a great trip in this beautiful country!
I love Rigi!!!! I’ve been 3 times so far. It will probably be 4 come September. :-) Zero times for Pilatus.
June will be fabulous for all the wildflowers on Rigi.
Been to both, and we prefer Rigi. As mentioned, the nice boat ride to Vitznau is a plus. You can see both peaks on webcams, might be good to set that up on your phone and check the weather at each peak in the morning.
Another vote for Rigi and boat trip! We walked down Rigi and best hike in my life!
Watch a few videos on Youtube and you can see the difference for yourself. Pilatus has the golden circle route that includes a boat ride. It has more tunnels through the rocks. On a nice weather day, either one will be a great experience.
Thanks! Although Mount Rigi is the clear winner, we'll look at a few YouTube videos just to make sure. And check the weather the day of. Thanks for the great suggestions.
Dissenting voter: I’ve been to both and I prefer Mt Pilatus because I’m a “mountaintop” person. From the top of Pilatus (on a clear day) you are practically surrounded by mountain peaks…even those as far away as the Lauterbrunen area.
We spent hours at the top, exploring the short trails, and had lunch seated outside, watching the cogwheel trains make their way up and down the mountain.
I also like going up the Schilthorn for the same reason. However, as some people mentioned, Mt Rigi is covered by the STP.
Sally,
I've been to Pilatus but not Rigi, and I really enjoyed the trip to Pilatus. I took the Golden Pass route mentioned in a previous reply, starting with a scenic boat ride to Alpnachstad. One reason I took that route is that I was really interested to try the Pilatusbahn, which is one of the oldest and steepest Cogwheel funiculars in the world.
I spent some time exploring the top and enjoying the views, getting photos and then had lunch in one of the two restaurants there. For the return trip I took the cable car down to Kriens. That's a two part process, as passengers have to change cars at Fräkmüntegg, which is a popular adventure spot with a toboggan run, Rope Park, Zipline, restaurants and hiking trails. If you start the trip early, you might have time for some "adventure activities". The final leg is the bus ride from Kriens back to Lucerne, about a 15 minute trip if I remember correctly. A short downhill walk from the cable car station to the bus stop is required.
You can buy the round trip ticket in the Tourist office in the Lucerne station.
Here's another dissenting vote - we've made trips to both and definitely enjoyed our visit to Mt. Pilatus the most. The weather was going to be much better in the morning and lunchtime. Since we were already booked for cruises to later activities we took the fast early train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad so that we could take the earliest Pilatusbahn trip. Like Ken above we took the really impressive cog railway to the top early in the morning and had stupendous views looking down from the last car. We climbed to the very top for even greater views and great opportunities for photos. We departed later in the afternoon using the gondolas and cable cars to Kriens. If we could only visit one it would definitely be Mt. Pilatus.
