My husband and I are in Montreux Switzerland for three days and on to Zermatt. A family friend suggested we spend a day in Lauterbrunnen and then travel back to Montreux. In looking at the area and reading long ago posts, I have come across Murren and the gondola to Birg. We will only have a day. Am I biting off more than possible here? The trip to Birg looks great and we really want to visit Lauterbrunnen, but need to get back to Montreux same day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It’s about 3 hours to Lauterbrunnen each way from Montreux. Another 20 minutes or so to Murren and 5 minutes on the gondola to Birg. If you’re not a hiker, Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Birg are more scenic than Zermatt IMO. The views of the Eiger, Munch and Jungfrau mountain peaks from Murren are spectacular.
Do it only if it is summer when the days are long; if it is raining skip it
Thanks so much. We will be there in June. So long days and we’re okay with getting back to Montreux late. Long day though for sure. Yes from what I see the views are magnificent. Zermatt on list for Matterhorn and the Bernina Express to St. Moritz.
Check the weather the day before and again first thing in the morning on MeteoSwiss website or app
If all looks good I would make the journey. For just a day trip I would not actually spend time in Lauterbrunnen, except to tack it on at the end, if you so desire.
Here is one way to do it:
Head directly to Birg and I would even suggest going all the way to the top of the Schilthorn for even more spectacular views.
In Sbb app enter Montreux - Birg (Schilthornbahn). You will take a bus in Lauterbrunnen through the valley (more waterfall views). Gondola up to Birg, enjoy. Go down only to Mürren and walk through the village, more fantastic views. At the other end of Mürren take the train across to Grütschalp. More views. Gondola down to Lauterbrunnen station, waterfalls views on the way down. Now you can add on a walk through Lauterbrunnen if you desire, or just head back to Montreux if you are ready to be done for the day.
Thanks so much. That’s exactly what we will do.
