Montreux. Is it worth spending 2-3 days? Hotel recommendations then.

We will be on a several week trip around France in April and May. We will be traveling by train. Mid May we’re planning on 3 nights in Chamonix. From there we are looking to head towards Dijon and back to Paris. It looks like taking the train to Montreux is efficient and an opportunity to spend a couple of days right on the lake. However as I try to find out more information and hotel options from guide books, there is very little information, if any.

Is Montreux a good town to stay and explore? Should we go to Lausanne instead? Or backtrack back from Chamonix to Geneva and head north from there? We are still very flexible in our plans. Our final destination is Amsterdam for our flight home.

We are an older couple, travel a lot, and have traveled a few times throughout France and Switzerland so we’re looking for new places to enjoy.

I really enjoyed the region. It is worth spending a few nights in Montreux or Lausanne. I prefer Lausanne over Montreux, but many on this forum prefer Montreux. The Chillon castle, Olympic museum and Rick Steves' walking tour of Lausanne are my top choices for things to do in the area.

I’m not a fan of Lausanne. I much prefer Montreux for its lakeside promenade. I have stayed twice (June 2022 and June 2024) at the Grand Swiss Majestic. I recommend a lake view room.
