I always like to ask for favorite restaurants/experiences just prior to going on a trip.
We will be in Monteaux from June 30 - July 3 (3 nights)
We will be in Wengen from July 3 - July 7 (4 nights)
We will be in Lucerne from July 7 - July 10 (3 nights)
We will be a family of 4 adults (72, 61, 26, 22) one with a bad knee, so keep that in mind; gentle hikes best)
We will have an apartment and plan to eat in or prepare great picnics to take out
We DO like to eat out and taste local specialties; however, we hate to leave a restaurant feeling like it was NOT worth the money.
ANY suggestions for your favorite eateries and experiences are appreciated!
Hi Kerry,
I will be in those same places in September. Have you downloaded the Fork app? They seem to have a lot of great restaurant reviews and even offer some discounts. I’ve used this in my planning for my trip. That said, I do love Hotel Baarren in Wengen. Great dinners with local ingredients.
Our favorite restaurant in Lucerne was "Ammos". One of the few in Lucerne that we thought was worth the money. Reserve a table alongside the river. As for a gentle hike, the walk from Murren to the cute little village of Gimmelwald was beautiful and easy.
I enjoyed Rathauskeller in Lucerne -- I am vegetarian, husband is not, both love beer/both ate well.
I don't have notes handy on Monterux, but I would get my fill of international food while there, then go hardcore local in Wengen and Lucerne (though I did have excellent Chinese in Lucerne as well). There was a lot of variety, good middle eastern/Mediterranean choices in a particular.
We also had apartments and the COOP always served our needs: breakfasts in, bread and cheese lunches for hikes.
The restaurant in Hotel Bären was considered the best in Wengen when we stayed there in 2007, and I see it is still holds that status. They focus on fresh ingredients, so from their own garden or nearby. We would see the hostess Therese head out after breakfast to visit the local farms for the strawberries and vegetables we would have that evening for dinner and dessert. It was all excellent.
This is their spring menu:

As for whether it is “worth the money’, you may have to adjust your expectations a bit in Switzerland, as restaurant meals there are very expensive. We manage quite well there by alternating home-cooked meals in our apartment with a few carefully chosen dinners out.
thank you for all of your suggestions!
I didn’t feel any restaurants in Montreux were all that great. Nearby, however, we found Ze Fork to be fantastic. It’s crazy because it’s in a high touristy zone, so it didn’t need to be as great as it was. But the quality, value, and service were all great. Enjoy!
