We are staying in Montreaux for our first 3 nights (2 1/2 days) in Switzerland in late August. We want to see the castle Chillon and the wine area above Vevey. We should have another day left over and could do the "touristy" thing - we are tourists- like the cheese/chocolate tour up to Guryeres
OR
I would love suggestions on some other day trip that would give us a more local/genuine Swiss experience. We are not interested in the thrill type of thing like Glacier 3000. Thanks
My trip report might give you some ideas. I spent 5 nights in Montreux June 2022.

Lausanne sounded interesting, though I suppose you may pair that with your vineyard excursion?
Any interest in hiking?
When I departed Montreux, as we passed through Sion, I thought that area might warrant an extra look.
There are two lovely mountain trips you can take and hike, or not.
Les Pléiades https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/destinations/les-pleiades-daffodils-and-stars/ and Rochers-de-Naye https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/experiences/rochers-de-naye/.
Best on clear days.
you could take the Golden Pass to Interlaken for the day, or overnight and return it's only wonderful
Gruyères is fun but touristy. How about a boat ride on the lake if you have some free time after exploring Montreux and Vevey?
We had a blast staying ten nights in Montreux earlier this month. We had the Swiss Pass.
Some of our excursions: Gruyeres, Rochers-de-Naye, Geneva, Lausanne, Vevey, the Lavaux vineyards, Zermatt, Chillon Castle. Our favorite afternoon was actually spent sailing across Lake Geneva to Thonon-Les-Bains. It was so fun to compare the Swiss lake culture to its French counterpart!
Thanks to all for the ideas. I have decided that we won't be going to cheese and chocolate factories - I'd rather eat them.
Carrie we are also staying at the Majestic Hotel Suisse - also because of the location so close to the train. We are going to Lucerne after Montreaux, and will be taking the Golden Pass.
It really is a lovely hotel--the view from the breakfast room can't be beat.
I managed to somehow miss the unassuming entrance across the street from the train station, I get lost easily, lol.
Carrie we are also staying at the Majestic Hotel Suisse
I hope you got a better deal than I did. They really raised the prices for the weekend I’ll be there next June and I can’t use my credit card points. ☹
Have a great trip!!!
We just stayed at that Hotel. We got excellent dinner in Vevey at Ze Fork, had a very fun time at Chaplin’s World (go later in the day), walked through the vineyards (St Saphorin/Chexbres, etc), went to Gruyeres. We also did one day to Zermatt. I would recommend all those things. For Zermatt, keep your eyes on the weather. When it is gonna be full sun, wake up early and do a FULL day there. Also recommend not only the chateau du chillon (why does everyone like it so much? It’s just a castle!) but the fort immediately behind it that recently opened as a tourist destination. Similar to the one RS recommends in the Luzern area, if you can’t make that one.
David,
I see that you "walked through the vineyards (St Saphorin/Chexbres, etc)". Did you have a map of the vineyards to know where you can do a tasting? OR is it just a walk through the vines and you have to taste wine down below at the lake level, closer to Vevey? Thanks
By walk through the vineyards, I need to be clear: we only walked on the roads. Wife is pregnant, so no point drinking wine alone. But it was very pretty and in each town you can stop and various places to drink the local wine. The roads are really nice.
