Monterosso to Murren in one day?

Hello
We have travelled from Monterosso to Interlaken in one day. (One long day) I'd like to stay in Murren this time. I can't recall how much farther it is from Interlaken and whether or not getting a train or cablecar is possible into the later evening.

Thanks!
Terri

Terri I believe the Swiss Rail site sbb.ch will show you schedules and connections all the way through to Mürren even if part of the trip is on the cable car.

Terri,

The trip from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen is about 20 minutes via the Berner Oberlandbahn. It's another 20 minutes or so from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen–Mürren (BLM), which consists of a cable car to Grütschalp and then BLM railway to Mürren. It's slightly longer via the Schilthornbahn. Whichever route you use, It's a very easy trip!

Be sure to specify the route you want to use when you buy your tickets. The tickets will include all modes of transport.

The trip takes between 9 - 10.5 hours depending on the specific route you choose.

Terri,

I've made the trip from Monterosso to the Berner Oberland a number of times. I find that the best solution is a departure at 07:33, arriving Interlaken Ost at 14:28 (time 6H:55M, 3 changes in Levanto, Milano Centrale and Spiez). As I mentioned above, the trip from Interlaken to Mürren will add about 53 minutes in travel time to that.

That's one of the quickest trips and will get you to destination in mid-afternoon which is a good time as your room should have been serviced. After check-in you can have a brief walkabout and then a nice meal.

Teri - I am doing this trip on July 10, using the following trains:

  • Departing Monterosso 6:54 am, arriving Milano Centrale 9:55 am
  • Depating Milano Centrale 11:23 arriving Spiez 13:53
  • Departing Spiez 14:33 arriving Interlaken 14:57

  • We are then continuing up to Gimmelwald. I'm sure the trains/cablecars will still be running at 3:00 in the afternoon. I did consider staying overnight in Stresa just to break up the trip...it's on the way, an easy walk from the train station, and scenic. But ultimately we decided to just deal with one long day.
