Milano Centrale to Flüelen (Treno Gottardo)

Hello everyone, I've learned so much by reading this forum and we are planning a June trip to Luzern, Pontresina, and Varenna, arriving and departing from Milan. We will have a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass for our Switzerland days. I'm having a difficult time calculating the best train combination from Milan to Flüelen (we will take the ferry across the lake from there).

Since we have the Swiss Travel Pass, would it be best to just take the Trenord regional train to Chiasso? From there we would have to take a train to Bellinzona and then join the Treno Gottardo, but both of those trains are included in the Travel Pass. Or is it worth another €10 it to take the EC to Bellinzona for the direct connection to the Treno Gottardo?

Thank you for any advice you might have.

Are you staying in Milan for a few days, or going direct from Malpensa Airport? There is an hourly Tilo train from Malpensa to Bellinzona where you can get the Treno Gottardo. The STP will cover part of that route.

If staying in Milan, I guess I'd spend the extra 10 EUR and take the EC to Bellinzona. One less train transfer.

Thank you for your quick reply. We will be in Milan for a few days (in Porta Venezia) so we would plan to walk to Milano Centrale.

If you decide to take the EC you still only need a ticket till Chiasso, as your STP is valid beyond that. With the Trenord train the same applies: You need a ticket till Chiasso. In Chiasso you can just stay on the train.

WengenK thank you, that is very helpful. To confirm that I am understanding things, I could pay for a ticket on RE 25512 from Milano Centrale to Chiasso (only 6 €) but stay on the train to Cadenazzo, as our Swiss Travel passes would cover the cost once we enter Switzerland at Chiasso?

you don't need to hop off and on in circumstances, you just shuffle the paper or apps from one ticket or pass to the next
