Milan to Zermat...

Considering Milan go Zermatt trip early Oct. Driving seems much quicker but is thr scenary worth the longer train ride?

Also, would you go back to Milan to leave or train to Zurich be really scenic too?

Thanks!

As Zermatt is car-free, you’d have to park in Tasch for the duration. Trains are excellent and efficient so choose them and yes, fly out of. Zürich if flights are favorable. Also, BTW, if you rent in Italy and return a car in CH, you will pay a hefty fee for the privilege.

What makes you believe driving is faster? On both Milano - Zermatt and Zermatt - Zurich the train will be faster than the car. But are you starting at Milano city? Or at the airport?

It is currently 7 hours by train because there are interruptions in the rail line due to construction/repair projects. When these are completed in early September, regular EC train service will resume, making it a 3 1/2 hour trip by train.

Google Maps is not a good source for public transport information. It will give you an idea, but you need to go to the source.

Currently there are works on the line to Domodossola, and there is a landslide on the line to Zermatt. But even with those interruptions the trip should take no more than 5 hours. Once this is all sorted out (which it will be by October) the trip will take about 3 3/4 hours.

Don't forget that you cannot drive to Zermatt itself, so you need to add at least half an hour to your driving time to take in to account that you need to park your car, wait for the train, and then ride the train... And on Zerrmatt - Zurich the train is going to be faster as well. And a one way rental is expensive...
