We will be in Milan for 3 nights in May then taking the train to Tirano and doing the Bernina express to either Chur or Zurich. Is going to Zurich too long of day, 8 hours, on trains? This will be our first visit to Europe and trying to read all that is recommended, or not recommended, can get confusing. It seems like Milan for 3 nights may be too long. The entire plan is: 3 nights each in Rome, Venice and Milan, 2 nights in Chur or Zurich followed by 3 nights in Dijon and 3 nights in Paris. Thanks in advance for recommendations!
Its more like 10 hours, Milan-Bernina Express-Zurich (start 10:20 arrive 19:53). You've got a long (90 min) connection in Tirano, and then a quick (15 min) connection in Chur. If doing it in one day is crucial for your timetable, you could do it. But we quite enjoyed our overnight in Chur.
Thanks Darren, that will be too much for us. Seems like just going to Chur will be long enough of a day.
3 nights in Dijon feels a bit long. Between Zürich and Paris, I would much rather spend 3 nights in Strasbourg instead, unless you have been before. Plus, train connections will be slightly easier.
3 nights in Milan is not too long at all: you can use one day for a day trip to lake Como or lake Maggiore (Stresa / Borromean islands).
Thanks, Strasbourg does look like a nice place to stay. I'm glad to be making these plans well ahead so changes can be made!
