Milan/Como to Grindelwald train route options

We are going to Grindelwald in December and seems there are 2 different routes we could take. Either from Milan via Spiez and Interlaken, or from Como via Lugarno and Lucerne. Just wondering which is the more scenic route, and if one uses a tunnel. Not too concerned if one takes longer if it is scenic.

Yes I posted in both the Italy and Switzerland forums as I thought I'd get access to different people's thoughts.

The Milan route is usually a bit faster, but the Luzern route is more scenic. The Luzern route is also more reliable as once you are in Switzerland trains are frequent and punctual.
The Luzern route is also better if you plan on getting a Swiss Travel Pass or a Swiss Half Fare Card, eventually in combination with a Saver Day Pass. You would then only need to buy the Como - Chiasso part locally.

Regarding tunnels: All routes involve tunnels. That is unavoidable. The Milano route will see you go through the Simplon and Lötschber base tunnels. The Luzern route goes through the Gotthard base tunnel, or if you choose the old route the Gotthard summit tunnel. The latter route will take longer, but is quite scenic.

For scenery and tunnel-avoidance I recommend the Treno Gottardo route mentioned above. The train runs a between Luzern and Locarno and does not reach Milan, but you can connect to that train at Bellinzona, or a smaller town near there (Cadenazzo).

There is still a tunnel on this route (known as the Gotthard Pass route), but it is much shorter and higher in the mountains than the long deep Base tunnels on the other routes.

The Gotthard Basis tunnel on the fast route between Milan and Luzern is the longest and deepest tunnel in Europe ( and maybe also the world). On the Milan to Spiez route, there are two long tunnels, first the Simplon tunnel and then the deep Lötschberg Basistunnel. Or you can choose a train that uses the old Lötschberg tunnel that is not quite as long by selecting a route via Kandersteg. But the Simplon tunnel between Brig and Domodossola in Italy is unavoidable by train.
