I'm looking for some spring break ideas. 7-8 days max on the ground. I have only been to Switzerland once, on a Eurail and followed Rick's tips to do Bern and stayed in Gimmelwald in high summer. That is the extent of it. This time, we'd come in mid-April. I'm thinking that DD would love a train ride. Seems like most prefer the Bernina Express (or following its route on a "regular" train). I'm not sure what hikes would look like at this time of year, or if it's soggy and rainy. Love the idea of combining it with a few days in Italy and flying out of Milan. We'd probably love one city and some kind of hiking experience. Could retrace my former steps to Bern and Gimmelwald but would love other ideas.
Mid April really is not the best time for Switzerland. Winter season have gone, but hiking almost is not possible, trails are deep muddy or even not accessible.
As you are thinking of adding Italy, why don't you decide only for Italy? For example on Lake Como or Lake Garda you'd expect nice spring weather, lots of possibilities for walking or hiking, lots of mountains around. And btw: It is a lot cheaper in Italy.
You won't be able to hike at altitude in April. It can be soggy/rainy but it can also be snowy and the hiking trails will still be covered in snow. You can do valley walks below Gimmelwald and village walks, but the high summer hiking experience you had in Gimmelwald will be very different than mid April there (and any other mountain alpine suggestions). I personally wouldn't want to go in mid April, but if it's the only time you have, perhaps stay down on one of the lakes and take a day trip up into the mountains if you find good weather. Then if not, it's milder down at the lakes for activities at lower altitudes.
Thanks, everyone! I'll move to a new destination!
