medication and bottles

Hello! It's been a while since I've traveled from my home in the US to Europe. Do I need to keep my medications in their bottles or can I use my pill organizer? I'm doing backpack only so I need every inch of space I can get.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Unless any of your medication is a controlled substance, you should be okay with the pill organizer. However, make sure you have a copy of each prescription with you. (A copy of what is on your pill bottles.)

This has been debated to death for years and also in recent months. It is, essentially, a country by country thing, the chances of incurring difficulty at customs mostly depends on where you are flying, but the reality is that most if not all countries in Europe "require" medicines in original packaging with Rx labels, and additional documentation is advised, from prescriptions printed out to letters from physicians. Quantity restrictions are typical, too, and controlled substances can be a problem, too.

I participated in this discussion a few months ago, and as a result of the discussion I carried all of my Rx in original packaging in my carry on luggage on a recent trip to France, took my refillable pill organizers and used them while abroad: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/packing/get-rid-of-big-pill-bottles-but-keep-labels

Where are you flying? Google the issue for that country, and read up on the requirements.

Good luck.

If traveling to Switzerland, you are allowed to carry medicines, including controlled substances, for personal use. No more than a 30-day supply [on the narcotic or psychotropic substances]. Edited.

Travellers are allowed to carry medicinal products containing narcotic
or psychotropic substances without an import or export permit,
provided that the quantity carried is no greater than that required
for 30 days, and in the case of exportation, that the destination
country allows this.

It does not say that you need the original packaging or a copy of the prescription.

Carrie....you misread it. You are only allowed to have a 30 day supply of drugs containing narcotic or psychotropic substances. All other medications are fine.

I carried my OTC pills and prescriptions in tiny ziplock pill bags. I asked the pharmacist for duplicate labels and labeled each bag. I then put AM, PM, Advil in separate colored snack bags that I got at Kroger (Fry's in AZ). The only things I left in the original containers were antibiotics that I carry in case I had a colitis attack and some old pain pills. This saved a lot of room and weight.
